Any Technical Folk??

    So the place where I'm staying has Virgin media cable.

    Speedtest show's a whopping 48mbps, but when I go to download (which is constantly, due to my work..) the download speed is really unstable, dropping as low as 6kbps.

    This happens any time of day, and even when I know the server at the other end can handle massive speeds.

    It's driving me ****ing nuts, and as the account isn't mine, as such, Virgin couldn't give 2 ****s when I called.

    Help!!

    Use that app MR was raving about for his phone, it detects wi fi in your area and what channels it uses then tells you which channel you should use.

    Might help might not and sorry but i dont have a clue what its called and I am going out now so cant check for you.

    I've been trying for 2 years to sort out the same problem with my broadband, and as you say, Virgin couldn't care less, they just keep saying they will increase my speed at no extra cost, definitely changing over to Sky before Xmas.

    I too have Virgin cable and it's been ****e overall. To be fair, sometimes the download speed is down to the other site, but you'll get nee help from Branson's little helpers.

    Aye, it's definitely Virgins fault, I have tried various sites, and they are sites I use constantly.

    I tried to stream a film just to see how it got on, and it was totally unwatchable, you should only need 2mbps to stream, never mind 48!

    Pile of ****e.

    If MR would happen to have that site to share (I was in Spain when he posted it son no benefit at time) or anyone else knows it, would be smashing.

    I had exactly the same problem on the 50MB package, what fixed mine was dropping to 30MB package (Due to the 6months free expiring). smooth as silk now and more than enough for my needs. No techie reason as to why from me like but that is what happened

    Problem I have is it ain't my house/account so Virgin won't do that anyway...

    Have you tried using an ethernet cable to connect to the router directly. Wired connections are loads more stable than wireless

    Aye, still the same mate, seems like the signal is pulsing, I'll have something downloading at say 800k, will drop to 60, up to 1200, down to 4, and so on , really annoying me.

    I even tried at 2am to avoid traffic, still the same.

    I had similar issues and it turned out the modem I had from virgin was ancient; I was using a separate wireless router. They sent me a new combined modem/router and that seems to have solved the problem.

    Sorry that isn't going to help you - as you say not your account so they can hide behind Data Protection and fob you off.

    Not to insult your intelligence but have you tried rebooting the modem / router or changing the broadcast channel in the router settings? Most people leave this at the default value of channel 1 - might get a better result on a different channel.

    Probs not the answer you are looking for but, move to BT Infinity. It used to take me about 2 hours to download a film online with BT Broadband, now with Infinity, it takes 5 minutes. Thats at any time of the day. I downloaded the whole 1st series of homeland last week, 12 - 1 hour episodes and it took about 15 minutes. Best of all when I called BT to say I was thinking of moving to Sky broadband, they fitted Infinity for free and reduced my bill by £12 per month.

    Just as a check my new modem is very glossy and emits a blue light from the front.

    You need to logon to the management console through a web browser - it will be accessible through an IP address which may be specific to the device rather than a common one that Virgin use - if you have the destructions for the modem it should be detailed in there but your friend will have to supply you with the password - can't remember what the default is - it's a long time since I set mine up.

    Once you're in there will be a text box or similar on one of the tabs that allows you to change the broadcast channel - I think it ranges from 1 - 13. I would go for something in the middle.

    Now you seem like a very sociable person so it might also be worth trying to have a conversation with the neighbours to see if anyone else has a similar problem - this could be a network device issue that is affecting the area as well - there's only so much data can go through the system at any one time and if there is a lot of downloading in your area this could be a factor as well.

    Sounds like it's the same modem as yours mate, and cheers for the tips, I'll speak to next door, I know her as my pals lived here for a few years, so she'll be alright, might even score a free brew like, double positive!

    It sounds exactly the same as the problem I had with the download effectively revving. Very annoying.

    if you have the super hub here should be able to sort the channel changing.

    If you haven't it is free to get one (Well was for me anyway). To be fair to Virgin my trouble was on the 50Mb using the old equipment so maybe that would have sorted it.


    hope you got everything sorted after the fire mate. Can't imaging how stressful that must have been, hope you are back on top.

    Aye, all sorted mate, although I lost a lot of income due to it, I think in truth that's a bog factor in 3 months at home, and go back refreshed!
