In his heyday as a player Schuster’s balance, grace and poise were almost unrivalled but as a human being the German has spent a lifetime tripping over his big mouth. Almost every time he opens it he offends someone and this time it’s Celtic’s turn following his absurd radio rant in the wake of Tuesday night’s Nou Camp drama. Scottish football fans may have been gripped by the action – Celtic’s supporters certainly were – but Schuster did not enjoy what he was watching as Barcelona eventually broke down Neil Lennon’s defences with the last kick of the ball. It was all too ugly, too stubborn and too dull for this self-styled radical whose own managerial clout is so high he’s spent the last 18 months without a job after being laughed out of Turkish club Besiktas as a dreamer. Don’t me wrong, I’m all for purists. But Schuster’s claim that Celtic should not even be allowed to compete in the same competition as Barca was just nonsense. If he had bothered to think before his scatter-gun attack he might have spotted a huge flaw in his argument. If the requirement for being allowed to take on Barcelona is that you must have a team as talented and adventurous as theirs, then Tito Vilanova and his men will be out of action for some time. No one else even gets close to Barcelona’s sophisticated, swashbuckling style. They are a modern-day sporting phenomenon to which the rest of the world can only aspire. The hope is they raise the bar for everyone and that, one day, maybe even Scottish kids will manipulate the ball in the same way as these fun-sized trailblazers. But, in the meantime, some poor sods have to go and play against them and on Tuesday night it was Celtic’s turn. What did Schuster expect from them or their manager? To try to match Barca pass for pass? Or just stand back and admire them while crashing to a record-breaking defeat? Schuster’s ramblings were reminiscent of that night at Ibrox five years ago when Lionel Messi accused Walter Smith’s Rangers of playing “anti-football” to grind out a 0-0 draw against Barcelona. A Barca team spearheaded by Messi, Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho. It didn’t do Jose Mourinho any harm when he knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League semis with Inter Milan by using an almost identical approach. Mourinho went on to get the Real Madrid job and pip Pep Guardiola to last season’s Spanish title. Or does Schuster believe Mourinho’s successes to be invalid on the basis of artistic impression? If you can’t beat Barca, bore them. No shame in that. As for radio rent-a-gob Schuster? It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
