Wonga as in the sense of money and a new name for stadium. Telegraph report a deal being sorted out with the payday lender. Can there be a worse stadium name? Hope Cortese doesn't get the same idea....he probably will.

Cortese is many things, but I think the man has some style and doesn't like "naffness".

That cant' be said for the fat drunk who owns Newcastle and his chav-u-like "sports" stores.

Wonga (and others in the same business) are a horrible company. Praying on those desperate for money and charging them over 1000% APR. Mind you, apparently over 20% of the people who borrow money never pay it back (funnily enough because they are not credit worthy). But shows how much money Wonga make if they can get by without chasing 20% of their customers.

Do you mean I can get money off Wonga and not pay it back (lightbulb moment).

Wonga are paying them £8 million. Newcastle have to give them £20 million back a week later

Cannot see Nicola signing too many contracts with payday lenders, online bookies or alcohol companies in the future.

Feel sorry for Newcastle fans. There is a kind of funny side to it, but Newcastle are one of the most proud historic old-fashioned clubs in England, and St. James Park is one of the great world football venues, and it's just a shame to see that made into a laughing stock for a bit of sponsorship money.

It's important to stay financially healthy and bouyant, and to build a future as well as celebrate the past, but it just pains me to see this kind of stuff.

I think it unlikely that the man who had the sponsors name removed from St Marys Stadium, that being a respectable company, is likely to have much truck with the likes of Wonga.com!

Just seen that St James's Park is regaining its name...smart move by new sponsors.

Did NC do a deal to remove the name or had it come to the end of the agreement? It's not a leading question I really don't know the answer but find it unlikely that he would break the deal and more likely that it had run its course. Just my opinion though, can anyone enlighten me with the facts please?

I think it had finished too.

Just checked...it finished in 2006...probably not renewed because of our relegation. They were replaced by Flybe.

    Thanks Fran.
That sounds a much more sensible version than new CEO comes in and says I don't like the name you can take your money and use it else where.......

Agree. Let's be realistic here - Cortese is a human being. To think he might behave differently to anyone else is rose-tinted at best. Everyone has their price - those prices may be different for different individuals, but there is nothing to suggest NC is made of some sort of higher-and-mightier moral fibre than anyone else. He was not born and/or bred as a Southampton fan, so gone is that sort of connection. If Wonga or anyone else waved the right-sized cheque at him, I have no doubt that we would be doing the same. And who would complain if it bought us a couple of pacey defenders?! I wouldn't like it, but it wouldn't hurt me to see SMS sponsored like it would have if it was still The Dell.

APR is about 4,200%. Not sure about the non payment as the company does pursue claims and made around £60m from feeding on the vulnerable. The trouble is there are so any rules and regs it's hard to set up something like a cooperative bank in communities which would help people save a bit at a time and have reasonable loan rates. I think Dave's bank is trying to do something but finding it hard to get the banking regulator on side.

Markus was a religious man and there may be somethings he wouldn't have liked. I see that the Muslim Council have said that they don't think Muslim players should wear names like Wonga on their chest. I do have some sympathy with their stance as they say it is wrong to make excessive money from the poor. They also add that of course there is freedom of choice so not the Taliban, thank goodness.
