I very much doubt that Downing has not been told face to face what Rodgers thinks about his performances! As for the comments Rodgers made after the Udinasi match, that was directed to the whole team.
If he wants sympathy he needs to look in the dictionary between **** and syphilis. He has done sweet sweet FA to earn his money, his place, his status, whatever he thinks he might be deserving. If you think your worth your transfer fee and the shirt you prove it, if your manager slates you the only way to prove hes wrong is to ram his words down his throat. Downing so far has done neither so crying to the press will only make his relationship with Rodgers deteriorate and help push him out of the Anfield door into the lower leagues, because lets be honest no other prem club will touch him.

Probably a ploy to get his transfer fee down. Maybe Villa don't want to have to pay for him. Sell him to some Turkish team or keep him in the reserves until his England career is dead. Make him train with Accrington Stanley.
He "thought he did ok in the Udinese game" well ok ain't good enough ,especially when he knows his place at Anfield is in doubt.He should have made sure he had a bloody good game at least!
To be fair- he's shown a bit of improvement and hasn't had the gametime of some other players. Yeah, he's not good enough and we have kids on half the wages doing twice the work... but he's not the worst player in the squad at the moment. Probably should be shipped off in January nonetheless.
Are Rodgers statements correct? Absolutely. Is Downing good enough? No. Has he shown anything close to the effort asked of him at LFC? No. Should he be shipped off in January? Yes. But is he correct in stating that his treatment in the public is harsh? I think so, a bit. It shouldn't be done in public, other than to tell everyone to step up. A personal criticism of a player should be done in the managers office. If he doesn't like it there he is free to prove it wrong or to leave. But when it's like this... it makes me a bit uneasy. We know he's ****. Rodgers knows he's ****. If he doesn't improve then sell him. Simple as that. Don't tell anyone unless it's vital. I like transparency, unless it damages player morale. If he feels hard done by, and he has friends at the club it damages our reputation.
But Danilo did he single out Downing? I thought it was WE were lazy today and certain players stick out like a sore thumb ( hence those getting upset as they know who they are). Btw, Sta ima brate!
At no point during the interview after the match did BR single any player out he said WE WERE LAZY downing knows that he is crap and felt that the comments were directed at him+ We don't know what got said to him in the office and it might be that what Downing has come out with to the media But it won't do him any good acting like a CRYBABY each time something negative gets said to him. It is prob best that we do sell not loan him ASAP even if it is at a loss just to get him of our books Lower league or abroad as i don't think anyone in the prem would buy him of us
