The most upsetting part about this thread, is that he was in our ****ing office ready to sign for us and our useless **** of a CEO ****ed it it up! Anybody got a short bit of rope!
194 goals in 265 games. Admittedly a lot of those were in non league but the guy certainly knows where the net is at any level. And they said Holt couldn't or wouldn't score in the Prem. He formed a good partnership with Paynter at Swindon and then got injured. But back to full health the guy has to be respected.
Shocker! the way he is going, the price tag will be rhodes-esque i think we went from playing from someone like dorchester to Swindon. gary hooper is also banging them in for celtic, wonder if he'll get a chance in the premier league
I don't know what the interest is in somehow "emulating" that premier league year. Who says history has to repeat itself? It's a new year, new era and I say we cut our own path. As I've said to Ipswich fans many-a-time "**** the past"
he's meant to be a bit of a, how can i put this, 'personality' off the pitch, which may well put clubs like ourselves off a bit but there's no denying he knows where the back of the net is and someone will take a gamble on him in january i think. issue as always will be that burnley can ask whatever they want for him and like the rhodes situation, that will be silly money. i'd guess £8m+
And so at sometime in their careers were Beckford, Cox, Paynter, Maynard, CMS etc etc etc. A lot of money has been wasted over the years on strikers from lower leagues who were scoring for fun but couldn't repeat the act following a big money move. It is one hell of a risk to take.
i actually thought beckford did pretty well with everton. he's not my cup of tea but he scored about 10 goals in the top flight which isn't bad considering.
Obviously David Moyes disagrees because Beckford has moved on. At least Everton got him on a free but if, for example, they had paid £xm for him I wonder if you would have thought that 10 goals in 2 or 3 seasons was a good return. I just think that some people lose all sense of reality over English strikers scoring for fun in the lower leagues. I was with you 100% on Rhodes who is a prime example. How much did Blackburn pay for him? How much did Spurs pay for Dempsey? How much did Newcastle pay for Ba? I rest my case.
no, you're right there mate. just don't agree that beckford was a flop really as he delivered goals and for a free i think he did well, but as i say, he's not my cup of tea and obviously wasn't david moyes' either! the rhodes one was always going to be controversial on here as people see the goals going in and want to see that kind of player at the club, but he was never a viable target and although i always felt he'd score goals at any level (and still do) it would have been a preposterous amount of money to shell out on a gamble like that (not just his fee - he is on £40k a week at ewood park). same would apply to austin. someone will do it though, money in the game is bonkers and there's often no logic to valuations, i just very much doubt it will be us.
he was my choice for an additional striker over the summer...value will be increasing by the week - feel he was probably being overshadowed by rodrigeuz in terms of goals last year - and could've been brought in at an ok price...probably not so anymore...
he was injured a lot when he first went to burnley but seems to have gotten over that now. he doesn't offer much else to the team other than goals. that might sound ridiculous but its a bit like earnshaw. don't expect him to do anything outside the penalty area - he's a goalscorer. he's scored almost as many goals this season as he did in about 40-odd games last year, so he's certainly on fire, but he, in my opinion, would be an even riskier buy than rhodes would have been!
Christ, i seriously thought you lot had lost your minds and were talking about Darren Beckford! And its only Wednesday! i reckon i better give myself the rest of the week off!
If Charlie Austin has calmed down his social life (A lot), he would be a great asset. He knows where he needs to be to score. Paynter would never have got his move to Leeds without Austin coming to Swindon. Until Austin arrived, Paynter was just an average player. They just gelled on the pitch. It seems that this was more down to Austin, as Paynter really did nothing at Leeds. Would he be our answer, I have no idea, but he could be worth a shot. but only at the right price. No more than 3 million.
