Rules: http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/143227-brb-prediction-league-rules-2012-13 brb takes a very brief look back when we last met: Oxford United 0-0 Gillingham On Saturday 14th April 2012, courtesy of a fellow Gillingham supporter I made the trip to the Kassam Stadium for our league two fixture against seventh placed Oxford United. Just under a week ago many Gills supporters were discussing the same journey in what appeared might be a vital play-off decider. However, expectations took a serious dent, when we lost on the bank holiday Monday at Priestfield to 20th placed Dagenham & Redbridge 1-2. That defeat then left us four points behind Oxford with only four games remaining. If we had beaten the Daggers this fixture against the Yellows would have been more attractive, sadly with the season dreams virtually gone, thoughts started turning to the financial implications. Therefore I expect that Hessy’s following army of 641 travelling fans was not as large as might have been expected in what I can best describe as a season of disappointment. Having got to this stage in another very long season and keeping the faith, I was still determined to go to see it through to the end. Although even my thoughts were turning to the cost of my next season ticket as I only had another week to get it at the lowest discounted rate. We made our way into the ground and the Kassam Stadium has stands on three sides with the fourth side undeveloped behind the goal on the west side. Despite an attendance of over 7,000, the Gillingham fans were in fine voice against a very subdued home crowd. With the absence due to injury of Jack Payne and Danny Jackman, Andy Hessenthaler was forced into changes, which saw the return from injury of Gavin Tomlin. Unfortunately Tomlin’s return was to be very short lived, within at least ten minutes he fell to the ground appearing injured and despite attempts to carry on had to be substituted probably feeling distraught at an inevitable situation. Half way through the first half Gillingham’s Argentine goalkeeper pulled off a superb save, to deny what looked like a certain goal. At half time the score remained 0-0 which was probably a fair reflection of both sides. The second half started this time with the Gills playing towards the half of the situated Gillingham fans. However, as the half went on, it felt as though the Gills late in the game appeared happy with a point. Normally a point at Oxford would have been a good result but to have any last hopes of a play-off chance we needed to take all three. Gazza normally known for wanting to get on with the game quickly appeared to be taking his time. We had worked hard with few chances but we had to try to snatch a goal in the dying minutes, although the reverse nearly happened when Oxford had a late penalty appeal turned down. The game finished as it started 0-0. As travelling fans we were happy but we knew it was not enough. Oxford fans surprisingly booed at the end, I presume at their own team’s failure and yet they still retained seventh place and chances of promotion.
