A graduate of the Nottingham Forest Youth Academy, James Perch signed his first professional contract in 2002, appearing in central midfield against the Magpies in a reserve game at the City Ground in 2005.

His first team debut had come earlier that same season and he also would go on to feature for Forest at both full back and central defence.

Missing the first half of the 2009/10 season due to injury, Perch had barely returned to the Forest side when Newcastle made an unsuccessful bid for him in January 2010.

However his 220th and final appearance for Forest proved to be their playoff semi-final second leg defeat at home to Blackpool the following May.

Within two months he'd completed a move to SJP and made his first appearance in a pre-season victory at Carlisle United.

A competitive debut followed in the season- opening defeat at Old Trafford and Perch kept his place at right back for the first five
league games of the season, with Danny Simpson recovering from ankle surgery.

Perch's first experience of top-flight football though saw him yellow-carded on each occasion, making him the quickest player to reach a ban in Premiership history.

Suspended for the League Cup win at Chelsea, James returned to the starting XI for the home game against Stoke City but headed into his own net to hand the Potters a 2-1 victory in September 2010.

Perch drifted out of the first team after the arrival of Alan Pardew as manager, losing his place at full back and making infrequent appearances covering at centre half.

The 2011/12 season however proved to be a momentous one for Perch, who began it on the club's reserve tour of Holland and then continued to be a bit-part player for the first team until the turn of the year.

Almost imperceptibly though, 2012 saw him play an increasingly important role for the team as international callups, injuries and suspensions began to have an effect.

Visibly growing in confidence during outings at full back, centre half and midfield, James established himself as something of a cult hero among Newcastle fans, earning the affectionate nickname of "Perchinho."

And the 2012/13 season began in similar fashion, with utility player Perch becoming even more important to the squad after Ryan Taylor's injury and proving a more than capable replacement for the injured Danny Simpson at right back.

I love how he anchovies our defence by sitting in front of the back four.

On his 27th birthday the lads at NUFC bought Perchy a gold fish.
    Perch was over the moon
What you gonna call him ask Jonas?
I am gonna call him "sparingly" replied Perch
What you gonna call it that for, asked Jonas?
Because it says so on the tin of food, he replied
Feed sparingly three times a day!
The old un's are the best un's.
    Happy Birthday Perchinio
