With the upcoming United vs Spurs game coming up which would you say is the worst officiated game you've either seen/watched in recent seasons? In order I'd probably say (obviously biased): 1. Chelsea vs Barcelona - 2009 (Tom Henning Ovrebo) 2. Stoke vs Spurs - 2011 (Chris Foy) 3. Everton vs Liverpool - 2007 (Mark Clattenburg) 4. Bayern Munich vs Fiorentina - 2010 (Tom Henning Ovrebo) 5. Manchester United vs Chelsea - 2011 (Phil Dowd) 6. Chelsea vs Manchester United - 2012 (Howard Webb) 7. Chelsea vs Wigan Athletic - 2012 (Mike Jones) 8. South Korea vs Italy - 2002 (Byron Moreno) 9. Liverpool vs Chelsea - 2006 (Graham Poll) 10. Graham Poll in any Chelsea Game
You could add any number of Utd/Spurs encounters. From the missed Mendes goal in the last minute, through the Webb penalty against Gomes for clearly pushing the ball away from Carrick, to Nani's catching the ball but not giving a free kick and instead letting Nani take the ball and score. Can add our semi against you last year as well, giving ficticious goals. Although I agree the Chelsea v Barca game was the worst.
It's easier to remember the ones where you were the victim, the 2 South Korea games stick out in WC 02 and Spurs Stoke last year was bad as was our game at Loftus. However where some games have 1 or maybe 2 decisions of note, the Chelsea/Barca game in 09 was by far the worst I have ever seen and made even worse by how high profile a game it was. 4 penalty shouts with at least 3 being clear cut and none given. Biased or plain awful ref?....the debate rages on.
Yeh the Barca v Chelsea game is definately the worst. I would also include QPR v Chelsea up there form last season with Chris Foy and this season With Marriner. We were robbed this season at that shoitehole with those non penalty decisions.
For me it has to be Foy and company. Admittedly I missed most of the game you had against Barca, think I must've gone to a youth game or something but I remember walking into a pub in Tottenham just before the final whistle of that game. The worst I've seen at a game I've attended is Plautz in the 2-2 against Sevilla. The ref gave everything to them, even Alves' dives, no matter how bad they got. At one point after giving Alves a freekick and letting him waste time, I mean get treatment for his "injury" he turned his back on Alves who was slowly limping off and Alves walked straight back onto the pitch and took the freekick with his "injured" foot. The ref was so inept that not only did he buy Alves' theatrics, he didn't even remember that he wasn't allowed back on the pitch until after play was restarted. He also let Poulsen get away with murder all game, including stamping on Jenas' head. It wasn't so much the major decisions though, just the total lack of consistency all game. Coincidently the single worst decision(after Mendes' goal of course) I've seen made was in the first leg against Sevilla. Go to 55 seconds in and you'll see what I'm talking about. Apparently the ref said to Robinson that he knew he'd got the ball first but taking the players legs after he took the ball made it a penalty It's a bit like a glitch penalty you get on FIFA looking back on it. Sorry for going on about Spurs decisions, they're the only ones I remember
I disagree. I thought Foy was bad in the QPR v Chelsea game for his lack of consistency but it wasn't a patch on the Stoke vs Spurs game. I am 100% sure if Spurs had a competent referee they would have won the match, you can't really say the same for the QPR vs Chelsea game. A lot of those decisions were down to a matter of opinion. Stoke vs Spurs is the worst officiated league game I've seen in years, it was as if Foy had money on the game or was a West Ham fan. United vs Chelsea (both) was up there though. 2 offside goals and a penalty which should never have been given. In the corresponding fixture 2 penalties given for United dives.
Only natural, I did the same. I don't ever recall a game where Graham Poll reffed our games fairly. He cost us the double the 2006 (we'd have beaten West Ham for sure IMO)
The spurs stoke game refereed by Foy was so bad it was funny...So was the Chelsea Barcelona one... There were so many decisions in those 2 matches which were truly bad.
Whoever refereed this game between Liverpool and Chelsea... Worst unpunished foul I think I've ever seen.
He won the ball I'd probably agree with that, it was the same ref who deemed this a red card offence meaning we had to play with 10 men away from home for over 30 mins....
Studs up is a straight red regardless, I suppose. Lucky there was no contact on Alonso really. No malice in it though.
It wasn't studs up, hence why it was rescinded. He toe poked the ball away and if anything the foul was committed by Alonso not on him. One of the worst refereeing decisions I've seen, especially in light of the importance of the fixture. Bosingwa's was terrible also though, not even a retrospective ban.
The ref in the Man Utd v Porto Champions League game who was unaware what offside was. Well him and his lino.
He's the one with the United tattoo allegedly on his arm. The worst thing about that red was that not only did Lampard try and pull out to avoid injuring himself and Alonso, Riley simply gave it because of the reaction of the crowd. He couldn't have seen it from where he was and simply guessed.
Bolton vs QPR is up there. Not only was the Clint Hill ghost goal not given, we scored an offside goal and we should have had a penalty towards the end for a clear foul and handball. Not really biased but very poor. That game could also have had a very big say in relegation.
Must admit Chris Foy last season was atrocious beyong belief how he and the lino's missed so much. Quite a few games at O.T. Wigan two very bad decicions as R.M. has mentioned. And the goal we did'nt get vs Sunderland last season, Cattamole's save also the previous season same fixture. Danny Pugh punched the ball off the line. Worst ref I've seen live Mark Clatterbug. I've NEVER seen him have a (good) game.
Everton v Liverpool was so bad he has not reffed an Everton game in 5 years. Personally, I've never seen such incompetence in the PL bar Foy. The worst thing about it is that despite the 10 and 9 man disadvantage to Liverpool's 12, Everton were still dominant throughout. Off the top of my head: - Gerrard convincing him to turn a yellow card offence into a red. - A cast iron red card not given after Kuyt leaps three feet off the air in a two footed lunge - 2 stonewall penalties not given for fouls on Lescott which were borderline kidnap - Red card which should have resulted after the above should have been given, as Lescott was about to shoot towards goal. As bad as Clattenburg is though, he's not a patch on Graham Poll in his heyday
Talking about refs, I wonder how Phil Dowd always manages to pass whatever medical tests they do. He is a tubby ****er and looks out of breath in the first ten minutes. Not being able to keep up with the play is somewhat of a disadvantage.
