We spent around £2m on Gazzaniga. We wouldn't spend that on any old L2 keeper. He'll be a lot closer to the team than you might think and will certainly be pushing Kelvin. Cast your mind back to Buttner and pulling out of that is understandable. A 3rd party (supposedly his dad) claims to be entitled to a large chunk of the fee after a fee had been agreed with Vitesse. We'd have had to pay the 3rd party a significant amount of money that we hadn't budgeted for. We couldn't come to an acceptable compromise. Just let it go!
Matt, I can't help but think it is far simpler than that. He was on United's radar (they have been looking for a replacemnt for Evra) and would have access to all the same databases that we have. The press start reporting interest from us, QPR, Fulham and the Germans. A deal looks like it is going to happen and the United team say to Sir Alex, "this is the lad that is near the top of our list of left backs... do you want him or not?" A quick phone call that says Unite are interested, keep it quiet and suddenly a spanner appears in the works.
Yep Cortese I'm sure is very persuasive but United and Champions League football. Bit of a no- brainer really!
Get off his back, he is better than any of us. He has done wonders for us over the past few seasons so he has earned his right to play in the Prem for us this year. Dont under stand why people boo players when they play badly? Its like you want them to have no confidence and under perform so if you keep slagging him off and the other players we will get no where and will be rock bottom with a team without confidence. Be positive for once and enjoy the season as its so much better than being on -10 points in league 1
True. I would guess it's a combination of him seeming to be somewhat injury-prone, his reputation suffering because Sunderland paid so much for him (his wages were probably fairly high too) and the fact most Prem clubs seem fairly settled in terms of their keeper. Assuming he isn't injured and his wage demands aren't completely ridiculous I don't think there'd be much to lose by getting him for free. My feelings on Kelvin Davis are pretty similar to how I felt about Dean Hammond. I very much appreciate Kelvin's loyalty and efforts over the last few years but I just don't think he's good enough to play in the Premier League.
Problem is there is little recent evidence to shoiw that Gordon would be any better. Agree that if he's cheap he'd be worth a look but not if it's going to prevent Gazza or Cropper coming through.
I think Gordon would be quite good on a short term contract. He had great potential but not sure how old he is now? but last year he was rumored to Arsenal and Celtic? Who knows maybe the summer out and him resting has done him the world of good with his injury problems but wages are probably quite high, im sure an ex £9million keeper doesn't come cheaply.
Just a couple of things left to say. This is the second time i have registered and so it appears i am a newby as you say but i'm not. I have supported saints now for 35 years and this does make you a bit negative AND pessimistic. The current defence as a whole is looking totally incapable of keeping a clean sheet. Fair play to you on here that has unbounding support for Davis and i know he has been loyal but in the professional game sentiment does not exist. This is not sunday league footy. If i am wrong and you are so right about Davis, why is he becoming a boo boy. Do the other fans see something and agree with me or are they all negative and stupid too!!!
Who called you stupid? You are entitled to an opinion, and it doesn't matter how many fans disagree or agree with that opinion, it doesn't make it anymore right or wrong. Just post it and join in the debate.
@alex_crook: Hearing #saintsfc back in for former Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon. NA hinted last week he might bring in some free agents. Hoorrrraaayyy he may not be world class but I feel like having a party! Just to get a credible rumour is nice!!!!
Winced when i put 'stupid' down. Sorry about that. The point i was making is that the so called doom merchants that are posting about Davis are realists and it is surprising how long it takes for the management to see it. If we are wrong Davis will not be dropped and will play all season and Gazza will start maybe next season with Kelv as his back up. That will not happen though for sure which shows we are right and he should have tried harder in bringing in a quality keeper in the summer. Dont tell me there arent any around, WH and QPR have got in new keepers that we could have had for a start and thats just off the top of my head.
Alex crook covers a few papers I think. He also does talk shows. He has good contacts at saints and along with Reading we are one of the two teams he focuses his time on! I would say he is as credible as they get and did come up with some good insights with the transfers this window! Maybe I'm just praying this is true!
All right boys, Mackem in peace. Davies was woeful when he played for us & although improvements have been made over the years I don't think he'll ever make a PL keeper. On the subject of Gordon he is an excellent keeper. Very injury prone however & does not seem to keen to drop his wages dramatically. According to reports in the local media up here he was on a reported £48k a week. I'm pleased he's off the wage bill. I don't know for sure if this is a sticking block but ultimately, it's up to him if he wants to play or not & if he does then maybe he will have to come to terms with the fact that nobody is going to pay him that anymore. He's still only 29 so should have a few years left yet.
