For superhero movies, I'd go for The Avengers, as far as I'm concerned The Dark Knight isn't in the same league as this unless you're talking about cast. I'm obviously not one of these people who simply jumps on the "new batman films are awesome", bandwagon just because somebody went and fetched a decent costume director and make up artist about 10 years too late.

Gangs of New York would feature fairly highly on that list if I had it my way, Daniel Day Lewis' performance as Bill "The Butcher" Cutting was incredible and the film has one of the best starts to a movie ever.

Completely agree. Probably the greatest screen performance/actor of all time, even without taking into account the massive diversity between his character and the man himself.

and yet you don't rate There Will Be Blood?

as for your thoughts on 'liking films designed to win awards' you're way, way off the mark there.

All films would be **** if they lost the main character.

Having thought about it though I'd rate X-Men origins and the Avengers above it. Loved Captain America too

sorry, i mant more - Ledger's performance saved the film. it's worth watching for him. But the rest of it is actually ****e - Harvey Dent / Two Face is borderline forgettable, and that embarrasingly stupid mobile phone sonar scene and the car that turns into a bike. plus Bale's voice is ridiculous.

    ORT

Yeah, he's probably my favourite movie character of all time. I just rate the role so highly I cannot comprehend how he was beaten to that Oscar in 2003 by Adrian Brody. That Oscars was a let down on the whole, as most of them are, with Chicago taking best picture, and Polanski best director (snatched from Scorsese's hands).

The line "That my friends, is the minority vote", is my favourite movie quote ever, just before he opens up Walter McGinn's head with his own bat...ruthless.

I just don't see what all the fuss is about with the Shawshank Redemption. And yet Blood Diamond wasn't on the list. Meeeental.

A lot of people don't understand the Shawshank Redemption's hype, but I totally get it. The film has soul and benefits from a great ending, from Brooks hanging himself not being able to cope being on the outside, to Red hitch hiking to Buxton to the stone wall. It had everything, violence, struggle, justice, comedy and shock value, as well as some fantastic acting, particularly from Red (Freeman). It's one of those films, like Shutter Island and Lucky Number Slevin that I enjoyed more the second time around.

Maybe I should watch it a second time. I'm not doubting that it's good, but The Best Film Of All Time?

144 here and I would question a lot of those being placed in that list.

In a moment I am about to make that 145 as two DVD from Cinema Paradiso, the rental club, arrived today.

The Dark Knight is by far a better movie than the Avengers.

It's not as great, action-wise, but it's a much better written movie.

Personally I have many gripes with the list. Where is the usual suspects? Why are the Lord of the Rings films that bastardised the books so high? And I don't agree with Shawshank being no.1, good film but massively overjoyed

Love There Will be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis probably one of the most complete actors you will see.

    99. Need one more for a cool ton

Problem with the imdb rankings is that if someone likes the film they give it a 10, if they don't they give it a 1

36/250, Most of mine ticked off were the war types and disney's, ha. Also I'm surprised any of the Mad Max's aren't in there and Jason and the Argonauts need to be a must see surely.
