People have such short memories it's ridiculous! Holty never looks good for the first half a dozen games, it's been the same every single season he's been with us. This time last year he was starting on the bench and coming on as an impact player, wasn't really until the Liverpool game that his season kicked in - and then look what happened!

I personally would leave him on the bench next week, but in no way whatsoever does that mean he's not going to come good again as I had every faith that he'll be just fine as soon as he gets his match sharpness back <ok>

It does worry me a little to see him playing out on the right flank so much however, that's what CC did with him at Florist and it didn't work out at all and he ended up at Shrewsbury. Surely he would have learnt from that wouldn't he?

My impression was the substitution was met negatively because it was Jackson who was substituted, who was working hard and looked dangerous. I think people thought that Holt should have been taken off.

As I've said, I'm a huge Holt fan but it does disappoint me that he starts the season so unfit. I'm with the previous poster, he will come good in the end.

Jackson had made a 10,000 mile round trip this week with Canada so I'm not surprised he came off after an hour to be honest, that would have been the reason, not because he was playing badly.

I also said this on another similar post however, he still looked sharp and was running everywhere. Had he have been struggling, I would have got it. To be fair, he made the exact changes I would just not in the sane order. I'm in no way knocking Hughton and his subs, just saying what I thought the boos were aimed at.

    Player performances.
-Holt was disappointing yesterday, he didn't look in the game at times don't if it was me but he seemed to be playing a lot deeper then usual. He usually starts slow so I'm sure he'll pick up form.
-Have to disagree with the Snodgrass rating effort wise I couldn't fault him but the quality which was evident at Spurs wasn't there on Saturday.
-The Kane chance wasn't a sitter but he could of done a lot better in my opinion.
-Jacko is looking sharp needs to not get caught offside but could potentially have a cracking season.

    Positives
-At times we played some excellent football when we kept it on the deck, I thought Surman linked up well with Jackson.
-Defensively we look sharp a couple of moments where we feel asleep.
-Clean sheet we hardly managed any last season.

My only major concern is we need to score goals and I said in pre season we needed a striker I seriously hope I'm wrong.

    Agree totaly<ok>
I think Holt should be benched for a coulpe of games to rekindle that fire in his belly we saw last season.
I also wonder if CC has had some part in the big mans lack luster performances so far, he was far to wide for long periods yesterday and although as has been said before about Holts slow start he's not throwing himself around like he has in the past, which is slightly worrying!
My MOM was Bassong yesterday, with the exception of his rather rash challenge on Howson ?

Should of took the money for holty, and bought j rhodes in my opinion, probably would of had our first win by now, premier league footballers on 10s of thousands dont have "six" games to get into there stride. All good things come to an end.

This time last season, Holt and Morison were just starting to thrive on crosses from wide positions from E. Bennett and Pilks. I know they're both injured, but in their absence, crosses of that quality are not arriving in the box.
If Tettey works out, it should give Garrido and Martin licence to get further forward and whip balls in to dangerous areas <ok>

It took him until mid-October last season before he contributed a goal that earned us anything from a game, he starts off slowly every season, why can't people remember things like this????!!!!!

Really agree with this, I felt we missed a bit of width yesterday. Surman will never be a winger, and Snodgrass I felt drifted inside quite a lot. Having Pilks available would have definitely helped with this, and I felt we missed him from free-kicks too, none of which I thought were particularly well struck.

OK, that's your opinion, but I'm sure I'm not alone in not agreeing with you. Holt needs the right sort of service and he certainly wasn't getting that yesterday.

Tony, at Forest Holty was played as an out-and-out winger. That might seem absurd to us, but if you recall Morison's headed goal last season, finishing a brilliantly weighted left-wing cross from Holt, who'd broken out of defence and counter-attacked down the left side, you can see it's within his capabilities, at least at Championship level. But there's absolutely no question of him playing as a winger now; what you are complaining about is much what people were criticising Morison for last season, drifting out to the wing too often; but it is done with a purpose. If Carroll had been fit, we'd have been comparing Holt's play with Carroll's old-fashioned centre-forward/target man play, staying within the width of the box and heading on long hoofs from Collins and co for Nolan and Vaz Te to run onto. That's not our game, and it's not Holty's game either. <ok>

I've not said he's being played as a winger and I'm well aware of Holty's abilities regarding running the channels, drifting out wide and delivery quality balls into the box (he made something like a dozen assists last year as well as his goals) and if you look closer at this thread you'll see I'm not actually complaining and I'm backing him to come good.

If I was going to worry, or possibly even 'complain' about anything however it would be at how little I've seen him get into any decent positions at all in the box yet in any of the first four games. His shot yesterday in the midst of the first-half pinball scramble was the first attempt on target I can remember him having, so I personally would like to see him link up more with Jacko in the middle of the park than get caught too deep and out of position when we push forward, which seems to be happening so far.

However, just to repeat I'm not actually complaining as I'm one of the only ones who seems to remember that every season so far with us it has taken takes him half a dozen games to get his match sharpness and into the real swing of things so I'm expecting him to come good and have no serious concerns at all on the back of just the first few games - three of which we have been unbeaten in succession just to add another positive into this thread <ok>

And Paul, if we have to wait until mid-October for Holty to score the first of his 15 goals just like last season then yeah, I'll take that thanks <ok>

All thosewho craved clean sheets last season are going to be happy. This year's team are going to be much harder to beat. However,I doubt that we are going to win more than six or seven games. We might get to draw about 50% of the matches but that doesnt stack up to more than 40 ish points.Probably plenty to finish above Southampton and Reading but we might be searching for one more duff side.Any offers?

Tony, I was responding to your comment about Calderwood. If you agree that Holt is not being asked/instructed to play wide, I don't see why you made any mention of his time at Forest and CC's handling of him at that time. <ok>

Holt looked as big yesterday as I've ever seen him. There is no excuse for a footballer to be overweight, and he certainly is!

This doesn't mean I now hate the guy. He is a legend and is my favourite current player. I know he always starts slowly, I just think its unacceptable for a professional footballer to be that overweight, let alone a Premier League player who was pushing for an England call-up last season.

We're playing a flat 4-4-2 so there is no reason why our forwards should be drifting out wide. Holt is not our most mobile player and his the most likely to put the ball in the net so in my opinion he needs to be around the box. I'm not going to make excuses for him though as I didn't think he looked very bothered yesterday, but it's early days so we'll have to see what happens all we need to do is get that first win and everything will fit together.
