Farsi? What a legend. At least one more person will know Ahmadinejad was grossly misquoted about the whole wipe Israel off the map thing <doh>

Company keep trying to get me to go on Brazilian Portuguese courses and used to have a teacher permanently assigned to the vessels I work on. Must admit I've got no interest in learning, picking up bits and pieces here an there though so pretty soon I'll be able to understand what the lazy bastards are saying behind my back.

I can speak Norwegian quite well but the one that I am having trouble with is Welsh. No amount of trips to Nant Gytheyryn nor evening classes can make the bugger stick. I will get there in the end, I am sure.

Blackadder: Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick?

Baldrick: No, but I've often thought I'd like to.

Blackadder: Well don't. It's a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roam the Valleys, terrorizing people with their close-harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the place names. Never ask for directions in Wales, Baldrick. You'll be washing spit out of your hair for a fortnight.

The Valleys; that's just a small bit in the bottom right hand corner of the province. The locals here call anything South of the Landsker Line as 'Nearly Welsh'.

But the place names; at least here they do describe what the place is. Go over to the Saxon side of Offa's Dyke and we haven't a clue what the place name means.

Having said that, your quote reminds me when they had, and this is gospel, the International Dyslexia Conference in North Wales. I had wonderful visions of long suffering dyslexics struggling to read the road signs to find the convention.

Not meaning to be picky, but ACS has actually said that it's taken him two assholes to learn spanish, which would seem to sugggest an unusual teaching method

    (though no doubt very effective)

I genuinely had an English friend come to visit, who got lost and phoned me up. I asked him where he was, and he told me he was at the gwasanaethau services...

We get a lot of tourists asking which way it is to a particular beach, "Which beach is it that you want?"
    "The Traeth Beach."

we emigrated to spain in 2004 to a tiny village up in the mountains of andalucia with no knowledge of spanish,we had some lessons off an indonesian born, dutch citizen and spanish resident villager(that was hard). She said the town where we lived had a different dialect to most of granada area, which was a different dialect to most of andalusia, which was different to castillian spanish.then we had to teach her geordie as opposed to english.
after 18 months we could understand and talk reasonably fluently but only if conversation was very slow/
morale of the story, learn the lingo first before moving and try not to miss the toon too much.
