I know we have a little antagonism towards Liverpool because of recent events. But let's not forget that as well a great footballing history that they have, there has been some real sad things in their history as well. Reading through some of the stuff that has been released today , just shows that a lot of people have a lot to answer for. I hope the families of the 96 can get some form of justice. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-19577033 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-19543964 @justice96
Normally I'd think not another LFC thread but not for this one. Horrible day which impacted the world over, I hope that people are prosecuted over this and glad the fans have been vindicated
It was a tragic accident waiting to happen, clubs putting up fences around the ground (we did it ourselves at the vetch) was a bad idea but something had to be done to control the fans running on the pitch during and after the game.....Another was opening the gates at half time to let fans who were outside enter the ground.(we again was guilty of that)...Hooliganism was rife at that time and clubs did what they thought was right at the time. It was a tragic accident that changed the way football grounds were run and shortly after i was recruited as ground control when the fences were torn down.....No single person was to blame as all clubs did the same thing ...It was an accident waiting to happen and sadly it did....
At the end of the day we are all football fans, nobody should come home from a game in a coffin mate. It could have happened anywhere at that time. The despicable lies told by the police and the sun at that time should lead to criminal charges. Where's the justice for the families I say.
Tragic. RIP the 96 souls lost. It makes football pale into insignificance. I think that's something every fan from every club can agree on...
Dai - Today's news involved unequivocal findings that the police covered up the evidence of what happened and actually falsified the 'facts' to denigrate Liverpool supporters. We all know it was a "tragic accident" but today is much much bigger than that.
The police were just a part of the incident. Someone allowed fences to be put up in problem grounds and whoever made that decision made the wrong choice....The clubs also must take some of the blame for opting to put up fences rather than more crowd control and extra police.. Its an amalgamation of many factors and not just the police...
Shocking revelations today that I think went beyond what most were expecting. Thoughts are with the friends and families and total respect for coming through this long fight for the truth. I just hope it leads to convictions of those responsible for the cover up and lies. It will be interesting to see what the sun's take on it will be tomorrow. I read on twitter earlier than while other websites were leading about the report, the sun was leading with the fact that Kerry Catona has argued with her ex. Pretty much sums them up
Dai, I usually don't want to get involved with threads that you contribute too, however hindsight is always 20/20 . The fences were put up to curb the spiralling football hooligan problem as at that time it was seen as the most effective weapon against the fighting on the terraces. In my opinion every thug that caused problems on the terraces prior to this apalling waste of life have blood on their hands. I make no comment on the lies that were manufactured after the tradgedy. I hope justice is seen to be done!
I'm glad that the Liverpool fans have been cleared and now I'm looking forward to them getting justice. The tragedy was terrible enough, the cover up was inexcusable by any definition. Puts our "wonderful" police force in their true perspective.
With a cover up on such a massive scale, it does make you wonder what's covered up every day that we never hear of
I agree with you 100% but i remember at the time that people were saying that fencing in the fans was a bad idea and some clubs in those days including ours were made of wood and a huge fire trap and they warned that they are compromising fans lives to save money on adequate policing and ground staff...Its sad that this had to happen before common sence prevailed....can you imagine the extra lives that would have been lost if the Bradford fans were hemmed in by fencing and they could not escape onto the pitch when the stand caught fire...Its does not bare thinking about.....
Found this if anyone wants to have a look, the more that register the better http://councillors.liverpool.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=17&RPID=4317525
Liverpool always got a bad rap . Look at the Heysel disaster of 85 , better still , look at the 84 final when Liverpool played Roma at Stadio Olimpico . When Liverpool won , Liverpool fans were attacked on buses and going back to there hotel rooms , to the point where hotel owners feared letting the Liverpool fans back into the hotel fearing reprisals from anxious Roma fans . When Liverpool made the final the next season against Juventus , hooligans from many " English " clubs wanted to extract revenge & booked there tickets for trouble . Although Liverpool took the total blame in the end , many clubs' " Hooligans " played a major part in the disaster .
As an exiled LFC fan of old, I remember that day with great sadness. I had family in the ground, and it was a real concern to watch unbelievable scenes of horror at a football game. To hear within hours the disgraceful disgusting lies was shocking. I hope those responsible for the events of that day and the lies they spun are well and truly hung out to dry. The truth is finally out, now we need the Justice for the 96, and their families.
Its taken 23 years to get to the stage where there may be, for some, final closure.Without the strength of the families to continue to seek justice we would not now be in a position to find out what really happened .There were too many lies, false accusations & misinformation towards the families & fans for this not to have a a concerted effort by the authorities to cover up what really happened .The least they (the families) should expect would be fresh inquests and if necessary criminal prosecutions to those found to negligent and perverting justice. I watched the game on the tele at the time with my then small sons.and I've never forgotten it so how anyone who was there at the time could function after witnessing those scenes has my admiration. RIP the 96
