“There’s no truth in the reports that we’ve contacted Nigel.

“There’s no negotiations and he won’t be coming here,” he said.

Look at the date though : 04.04.11.. compared to now 22.04.11. Things might have changed, either way I hope he isn't one of the free agents(going by my mate) we are currently talking to.. I really hope it's someone like Larsson, Elmander and even Taiwo if possible knowing the reported interest in Enrique. We are also talking to 7 other players who have contracts.. don't know who though. INITIAL TALKS remember, nothing exciting yet. <ok>

Yeah he's a left winger but we could easily move Guti to the right? Oh aren't we forgetting LuaLua here who can play on both wings and Gosling?

I would be very interested but £18m does seem a little bit steep for a player of his age - make it £10m and sign him up for 5 years! <ok>

i had a look, they're supposedly in talks but no pen to paper. he's only got a year left too...

"DIMITAR BERBATOV is locked in contract talks that are set to roll into the summer – but he could be the first victim of Manchester United’s new pay policy.

The Bulgarian striker wants a three-year extension and a wage rise to around £140,000 a week – but United are only offering to add two years to his current deal.

They are also unwilling to hike up the basic salary from his current £110,000 a week, as the Glazers attempt to introduce a new incentive-based pay structure.

But Berbatov, 30, is the Premier League’s leading scorer with 20 goals and believes he is worthy of an improved offer.

He has been suffering a difficult time on the substitutes’ bench recently – and his frustration boiled over in midweek as he stormed out of Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson was seen laughing on TV with No.2 Mike Phelan as Berbatov sulked in the dugout during United’s Champions League win over Marseille.

After the game, the angry forward jumped over metal barriers to avoid the Press and he also snubbed autograph hunters.

Berbatov has less than 18 months left on his contract, but wants firm assurances he is still part of United’s future plans.

Just my 2cents worth. A lot of people have made valid points about him being slightly older than we thought we'd be looking for, and I think that as a general rule youth and pure talent is the way to go as well BUT who would be better to help these young up and coming potential stars to develop than someone with Berbatov's experience? He reads the game very well and seems to have a brilliant footballing brain so being able to pass that side of his game on could be extremely valuable to someone like Airey/Richardson and whoever we do bring in.

It's all well and good having really talented youngsters coming through the ranks and being brought in from abroad but they need to have people to learn from. Shola and Best are our top strikers at the moment and despite Shola obviously being passionate he's not the most gifted footballer!

Don't be so naive Tash, that's more than he's worth and his movement is terrible, there are plenty younger players who would be better and cheaper.

Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov could be set for an £8m return to Tottenham this summer after talks on extending his contract at Manchester United stalled.
Full story: Sunday Mirror

£8m looks like a bargain, if we could swoop in and take him for that much instead of tottenham i'd be a happy man

Think maybe Spurs and London appeal more to him than us and the freezing North. Wouldn't mind him for £8m though.

Sorry, but just read through this whole thread and it's people whipping each other up into a frenzy over a player who is the kind of luxury player we don't need and it's never gonna happen!
I thought we were over signing overpaid, older prima donnas who don't really care for the club.
Sure he has a good record and could probably do the business for a season or two, but we'd pay through the nose and end up having to break the wage structure to sign him as he's not going to take a paycut and no European football.
Personally I'd rather sign someone younger, so if it goes tits up they're less likely to do an Owen and cost us millions with little return by the end of it. *

* Excluding Xisco in my example <cheers>
