A good interview with Sammy... top bloke...

    http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/ne...ing-for-return-to-nufc-action-79310-31796652/

SAMMY AMEOBI must feel like he’s spent the entire year waiting.

A serious knee injury slowed the speedy young gun’s progress back at the turn of 2012 and, just as he had posted a full recovery from that ailment, a pre-season knock prevented him from playing any part in Newcastle’s first foray into Europe for five years.

His frustration was heightened by the fact he was pencilled in to figure in the Olympics for Team GB before his injury problems – a major disappointment for the younger Ameobi brother.
Now, thanks to the seemingly never-ending roadworks being carried out on Benton Park Road, he’s waiting again for the Sunday Sun to arrive at Newcastle United’s Longbenton training ground for an interview.
Luckily Ameobi Junior remains the same patient and polite kid who burst on to the scene some 12 months ago, and one flash of his mile-wide smile confirms the lateness of his interviewer is not a problem.

To be fair, he has plenty to be happy about. He has just completed his first full training session of the season and with a fortnight to prepare, reckons that Monday week’s trip to Everton is a realistic comeback date.
Even if he doesn’t get the nod from Alan Pardew for that one, there is such a glut of games that the younger Ameobi brother is surely guaranteed a run of matches at some point this season. That kind of opportunity is all that he asks for.

“I can’t wait, I just can’t wait,” he tells the Sunday Sun as we run through the prospect of trips to Madeira, Manchester and Merseyside over the next fortnight.

“I’m just looking forward to it, and the more games there are, the more chance I have of playing. I just can’t wait to be back in among it because when you’re injured it’s torture watching games where you would like to be involved.
“My best memories of Newcastle are in Europe. Shola scoring his goals is a big, big memory of mine, so to be part of that would just be immense for me. I obviously missed out in Greece but I was excited watching the draw and seeing what games we will have in the Group stages. I travelled and experienced it in Greece and it was something I am just desperate to properly taste now.

“I think all of the young lads are excited about it. Something big has happened at this club for young players, and the manager has really shown that he is not afraid to give us a chance. Now we have to do take advantage of that.”
He returns an older and wiser head than during his first flash of success.

He then proceeded to illustrate that he was a player in his own right with an important goal at Scunthorpe in the League Cup before a series of impressive little cameos. A long-term contract came his way and with it some very high praise from Pardew.

“My life has changed completely. It’s been a great year and I’ve really just enjoyed everything I’ve been doing,” he added.
“I have said time and time again that I’ve got a long way to go before reaching my full potential. I’ve really enjoyed the last 12 months but I need to improve on that. I don’t think for a second I’ve made it.
“It’s nice to get recognised. I’m a young Geordie so it is fantastic to get some recognition from local people. I do get my fair share of people coming up to me and that comes with the territory. It’s nice, it’s something I dreamed of.
“When I was young I was a massive fan. I remember when I was like that and I was asking the players for autographs and what have you so I can completely sympathise.”
Fame is a fickle mistress, though, and Ameobi knows that he will have to recapture his career momentum through performances alone. “I have to prove myself all over again. When you’re away your fitness lacks a bit and you’ve got to work your way back into the team,” he said.

“I have been injured but I don’t want people to have forgotten what I’m capable of. I’ve been working really hard, trying to get back to full fitness.”

The injury came at the worst possible time but it did teach him a new-found appreciation of reading – thanks to his older sister. She recommended the Magicians’ Guild books and Ameobi admits he is hooked.
“I don’t know about golf – I’ve started to read. My sister got me into it and I’m hooked,” he said. “It’s fiction, random stuff mainly but so far I’ve been reading the Magicians’ Guild trilogy. I’m on to the second one now and really enjoying it.”
For his next trick, Ameobi hopes to secure himself a regular starting place .

Could our two young strikers be any more different? Sammy is the absolute antithesis of Ranger, and will be an infinitely better player because of this!

I feel that technically, Ranger and Sameobi complement eachother well, one a powerful striker with good hold up play, the other a tricky speedster capable of playing out wide. Style-wise at least a Shearer/Bellamy combo.

It makes it all the more annoying that Ranger has a disgusting attitude. Much like Nolan adopted Carroll and calmed him down, I wonder if a season living with Kuqi when he was here would have inspired Ranger to be a man rather than a spoiled boy.

Sammy though, like his brother is a model pro. My only concern is that with the progress the club is making he may become nothing more than a (willing) backup player. Fingers crossed these injuries have not set him back too much.

I can 100% say I'm glad I think you'll be right...Ranger was born with a gift (be it through genes or Jesus) and he is essentially wasting it everyday he doesn't give 100%...He could've gone to World Cups and Champions League, but the way he's going he'll be lucky to have Johnson's Paint Trophy and The Conference League!

Sammy needs to stay fit. I don't want him going the path of Wor Shola, being riddled by injuries throughout his entire career.
