Huge issue with that. Just because someone is religious, has absolutely no bearing on intelligence. Its something like whether one person is tall, or a person is left handed. You either are or you aren't. While you might not comply with that, it certainly doesn't give you any ground to cast judgement.
i think his point was that for many who perhaps lack much in the way of moral judgement of their own accord, religion can, and does, provide enough guidance to help them lead a good life - i don't think it was a pot-shot at religious people per se.

Age of consent doesn't make a country more or less civilised or developed. If children are properly educated they won't have sex until 16 or so anyway, and they'll do it safely. Forced or arranged marriage (indeed at any age) is a different kettle of fish. For me, the problem - the root cause - is religion. I see the point you're making, of course, but it's interesting. Atheism, due to culture and schooling etc is something that you have to find for yourself. You arrive as an atheist by questioning, reasoning, making your own decisions - this requires a modicum of intelligence or at least a glimmer of personal ambition. I wouldn't say religious people are 'stupid' as a whole - many of course are, just like with atheists or agnostics, but many are ignorant, intolerant or living in a comfort zone. Just remember that it's the same god you thank for your nice life in England that's letting Africans (who are much more fanatical than you, most likely) die in tin huts by the thousands.
