Hero. Thoroughly decent bloke and a very fine manager indeed. With true acknowledgment to Curbs' great achievements, Lennie remains my favourite Charlton manager.
Lennie is a hero. Not one of us would have turned down the palace job! He owes us nothing and I would b very disappointed if he got booed on Friday. The man is a gent.
My love of LENNIE has deffo been soured since he joined them and at the same time described the Charlton stuff as a long time ago ....maybe but it was a major part of our history and at the time his beloved palace treated us like scum and fleeced us and would happily of seen us go under so bit different from just joining a rival to be honest
Is he a Palace fan? Lennie is a Charlton hero, for me there's no doubt about it. He guided the club through the most difficult years in its history with great dignity, giving us 4 years of top flight football amid just about the most trying circumstances possible. The fact that he has now taken a job at Palace doesn't change things for me, because so few players/managers these days play for the club they love - I know it was just a job for him, and that may jar with us now that we're blessed with Chris Powell, but that doesn't diminish his achievements.
We have had two great managers, Seed and Curbishley. Let's hope that a decade ahead we can make that three. But in some ways Lawrence achieved a more difficult feat than any of them. And he has remained throughout a gentleman and a credit to professional football. There are not that many about. A Charlton hero.
Part hero part god. He worked a series of miracles with us and the fact that he's now manager of another club (regardless of who) is neither here nor there. I'd definately cheer him were I at the Valley on friday, and I think it's a bit sad that people would boo a man who achieved so much with us.
Lennie saw us through a very difficult period in football with no ground, little money coming in and playing in front of dwindling crowds. Had we been relegated in that time who's to say we wouldn't be where Luton Town are today? During Lennie's time rescue takeovers didn't happen. Portsmouth would have probably folded 2 or 3 times now during that era. You only have to read Curbs' autobiography to realise what he had let himself in for when Lennie signed him to appreciate the amount of hard work and almost salesman-like technique Lennie had used on Curbs alone let alone any other signings. Lennie also worked in an era when most professionals didn't make enough money to live off the money they made for the rest of there lives so is bound to find himself in a position today where he needs to earn money. As for joining Palace well our club wasn't in any shape at the time to offer Lennie any work as we could barely afford to find the money to pay our own players let alone bring in Lennie for old times sake. Did Palace do it just to wind us up? Probably but then didn't we bring in Dowie.... At the end of it all Lennie will probably be best remembered for his time with us and certainly won't be remembered for his time at Palace so I would rise above booing him next Friday.
If the only job the guy could get was as nursemaid to alice and nigel dont knock him if he tries to win their support by referring to the time he was a warrior as being something in his past. To those who supported him then he will always be a hero and we can be magnanimous if in his later years he has taken a career of which we might not approve. We have a had new warriors as well as the odd corporal pike since those days. Remember how he fought for us and praise him for that.
I was one of quite a number of fans who wanted Lennie to return in some capacity "director of football" or whatever after he became available, since during our decline there didn't seem to be anyone running Charlton who knew anything about football. However, although he was available for quite a while we didn't offer him anything, Palace did, and that's his livelihood. It would be terrible if he got a hostile reception and I don't think he will.
If he had resigned the day after the Leeds play off final, joined palace, taken half the team with him and was still palace manager i still wouldn't boo him. How he didn't just give up is beyond me. The man is a legend and should be treated as such.
I went to virtually every single game under lennies regime home and away....well they were all away apart from at the valley before we left. True he is an all time legend, though to say I'm surprised he didn't quit why would he it was a job I remember being gutted when he left for Boro and he is a lovely man and it seems like he still has the support of the Charlton fans though they must be of a certain age to remember him. I wouldn't boo but his stock has definitely dropped some what with me due to his employment with them.
He is without a question a Charlton hero but I cannot wish him well in his current job sorry just can't. Will he be booed on Friday? possibly but only by a minority and only for a very short time.
I'm with you all hell when he came back with Bristol rovers I cheered him but with them......no ....hope he fails miserably
If he is director of football at Palace does that mean he will sit in the stand on Friday? Or will he be in the dugout? If he does sit in the dugout I hope he will get some recognition from the Charlton fans on the way in and out of the tunnel.
