Martha Reeves? As in Martha Reeves and the Vandellas? Singers of Dancing in the street, Jimmy Mac & Nowhere to run?

I'm guessing most of the lineup is the same as the Humber Street Sesh. Might head in tomorrow.

Gutted I'm missing this tonight. Missing out on Spiritualised, TOWNS and The Neat. TOWNS are a must-see (they aren't from Hull)

Indeed, I saw Edwin Starr singing in LA's. Got to shake him by the hand. You could tell he was a proper old school entertainer. A few days later he was playing at my mates works christmas do.

I saw him at Beverley Races once, performing on the side of an articulated lorry, very surreal.

Really? Can't say I ever notice. It's one of those places where no one ever really does anything to make you pay attention to anything other than your own mates.

I reckon you're just getting old Party ;)

I used to go in Haworth & Gardeners all the time a couple of years back when I lived round there. Before that, it was Main Event & Turnpike that was my watering hole.

They've never been glamorous, I can't pretend that, but I think the last couple of years they've taken a real nosedive in terms of clientèle.

Especially the back of Gardeners. Rough as arseholes it is now, I'm forever trying to get my mates to get up Newland instead where there's civilisation, but I'm usually met with the classic "It's a bit expensive up there though", which deflates me.

They're full of the steroid nutters who go to my gym and don't talk, but just shout at each other. The last time I was in there, one of them had his cock out rolling around a table. I mean, I ask you.

Oh, there was another time one Xmas when that Derek George bloke and his cronies were in there, bothering me and my mates.

I've gone off it, I have to say. Mind you, the last time I was in was Bank Hols, like I say. So you tend to get the 'all dayers' who can't handle it in there, and at 7pm they are somewhat worse for wear. Regardless of how many tattoos they have on the back of their head...

    I sound snobby don't I?

<laugh> With a name like yours, I'd expect you to be the bloke with his cock rolling around the table.

I agree that it's not exactly glamorous but I haven't been legally old enough to drink long enough to have seen it's former glory of masquerade balls and dinner parties ;)

In all seriousness, you're probably right. I mean, I've never seen someone whip their dick out and slap it on the table, or had any problems with anyone there, but it is surprising antisocial for a place that's usually so packed. I think the biggest attempt anyone has ever made to do any more than nod at me was when a bloke asked me if he could borrow the chalk for his cue.

Can't say i'm a regular in either Haworth or Gardeners, but if it's a quick one it's all right. If we're off to Piper or off down Newland Ave, we tend to go and have a few in both.

I've never had any trouble in either.

Now Haworth will be packed full of students again i assume.

This morning I took a trip to see what this Freedom Festival was all about. I was confronted by a real taste of cosmopolitan Hull, a real sense that in some small way Hull can match other more trendier places when the sun shines brightly. All around the Marina, Princes Quay and Queens gardens, hundreds if not thousands of people were enjoying themselves, whether sat outside of the many bars or just sat on the grass in Queens gardens, Hull was a pleasant place to be, music, food, ale, and just the sun glistening on the waters of the Humber, all made for a most pleasing sight.

I even got to see Martha Reeve's doing a rehearsal, and she sounded good, just a few people there applauding her efforts later on would be many more artist performing, most I've never heard of but there again I'm of the older generation. But my point is that, today Hull is certainly a tourist destination when it can put on a show like this, as with the Clipper event not so long ago. I know it can't last, when this is over Hull will again have its critics out in force, but if the sun is shining tomorrow then spend a few hours at the Freedom Festival, and whoever puts all this together, well done, for today Hull has come a long way in proving its many detractors wrong.

I've just got back from it, a nice stroll around with my friend.

Unfortunately, I don't think it was as good as last year. Tonnes of irritating teenagers (some must've only been about 14) pissed out their skulls, getting on my nerves. And a lot of lads walking about with their arms out as wide as possible, like they'd **** themselves, trying to walk into me. I'm fed up of that happening, I do not shoulder barge strangers.

Still, it was alright. My friend (female) got some unwanted attention in Fruit from various sleazios. We found it ok, but a bit underwhelming compared to last year, not as much going on.

Martha was a bit croaky too. Mind you, she was old.

Ive just got back from freedom festival , i didnt seen any angry kids or posturing . i saw a little bit of that near queens gdns but its nothing you dont see on an average night .

I thought it was a great event and wished those that sat at home shrugging their shoulders could see it for what it felt like .

With the weather it feels like you are on the continent where everyones behaving and not going to the extremes .

I didnt go in Fruit though as ive been in once before and it was a bit sad and sceney then.
