At home, it would be nice to see us line up in an attacking formation. Flecther and Saha up top anyone?

Could we play Sess in the middle of a midfield 4, with Catts doing the spade work? If not where does he fit into an attacking line up?

That would mean no place for Larsson though.
What with all these fancy wingers we have.

Seems like it will be 4-5-1 for us transforming into 4-3-3 on the counter.

I reckon it should be 4-2-3-1 Catts and Colback in front of the back 4, then Sess, McClean and AJ is the 3 and one striker ATM Fletcher up front. We than have some good subs to come on, Larsson, Gardner, Vaughan and forward Ji or Saha.

I think with the team we have you've got to play 4-2-3-1

    ---------------------Mig----------------------
    Gardner--O'Shea--Cuellar--Colback
    ---------------Larsson--Catts-------------
    Johnson--------Sess----------McClean
    ------------------Fletcher-------------------

That would accommodate our better players, allow for a strong attack and allow the defence to be covered

This. Protection for the back four and looks awesome going forward, spesh once they get accustomed to each others style of play/preferences etc.

Be careful what you wish for. We have been piss poor this year in a 4-4-2. The idea of banging it up to your strikers doesn't work so well when both want to be the main man.

I also think that's the best formation for the players we have I think the most difficult part is who the midfield two who do we play I think first choice would be catts and maybe Larson or collback but that's the nice problem that mon had<bubbly>

The problem with the 4 2 3 1 as we have played it, is that it soon turns into a 4 5 1, which surely we can't do at home and expect to win more than we lose.
As I see it, if you count Sess as a midfield player, we are still playing with one up at home....??? Really~!!
I'm not saying that I would expect both Fletcher and Saha to start, but at least play Sess up front alongside Fletcher at home to give us an attacking outlook. However, based on the first couple of games, if we do go 2 up, Saha looks sharp!

I really don't like Larsson in that role, at premier league level he is out of his depth and it shows with his positional play. My only other change to that team would be to play Westwood in goal.

I have always been old fashioned and a fan of the 4-4-2, times are changing though and so is the way football is played. Days of getting the ball out wide for the winger to whip the crosses in for the 2 centre forwards to get on the end of seems to have fallen behind the 'modern day football'. It's all about possession now with quick, direct passing looking to make openings.

Fletcher upfront by himself for me, he is there to hold the ball up and bring Sess, Johnson and McClean into the game as an attacking threat.

4/2/3/1 is certainly the way we have to play with our current squad

it will get the best out of them IMO

at times I would like to see us go 4/4/2 with Sess playing out on the left McClean dropping to the bench and Saha playing upfront with Fletcher

and the team IMO should be...

    --------------- Mignolet ---------------

    - Gardner -- O'Shea - Cuellar ---- Rose -

    ----- Cattermole ------ Colback --------

    Johnson ----- Sessegnon ------ McClean

    -------------- Fletcher ----------------

Can't honestly see how you could drop Larsson, free kick specialist of the team who scored 8 for us last season...

This is the one for me. I was always against playing Catts and Colback together but last season City did the same with De Jong and Barry and it lets the wingers/flair players have a bit more freedom. looking forward to the Rose/McClean partnership! Bit harsh on Larsson but its a squad game nowadays.

Good heavens most of us posters agree the formation/tactics we should play!!! DO you think a petition should be sent to MoN telling that the democratic republic of Sunderland supposrtes have decreed how we want out team to play. MoN is of course to allowed ponder about Larsson etc but essentially us proles want to call the shots.

Somebody is bound to come on now and tell us why we are wrong!
