The combination of moving abroad to a new country, learning the language, culture etc etc will have ment that a diagnosis would have been a guess until all this was in effect settled down. QPR had an agreement to sign a promising young player and took advantage of that as did he on joining. The fact he played for the team is a sign he is trying and that he has accepted help is a major positive and can only aid his recovery.

I understand your preoccupation with the implications this might have about the judgment of our backroom staff. But the fact is we know so very little about Samba and can only guess at what has brought on his suffering. Depression can hit for a huge variety of reasons and I feel youre looking at it like its an easily identifiable 'injury' that can both be picked up on by medical staff and something that can be somehow sneakily hidden by Diakite himself.

Thanks swords. I appreciate your critique of my English skills.

No perhaps you can enlighten me on how the club would have an inkling of diakites depression?

I'm only playing the devils advocate here ironman, but it was very mysterious as to why he missed the last few games last season. No real reason was given by the club.

Just look at the timing of it. Its disastrous! In fact, its so bad, it looks very conspicuous. He missed the crucial run-in last season with a "mysterious virus" and now, having just signed a bumper deal with the Club, he's off home for God knows how long.

    I'm sorry but I smell a rat.

(I'm not preoccupied with the judgement of our back room staff by the way. I'm very supportive of our current Management team but it looks like they might have fu*ked up here)

You had a go at me first! No offence mate.

Nines explains better than I can, how the Club should have been more aware of a players situation before completing such a major deal.

    9s I agree whole heartedly.
The timing doesn't look that great.

However, My point is depression is not something that can be predicted or diagnosed by anyone but the sufferer.

Did he pull the wool over everyone's eyes. Possibly perhaps even his own and didn't want to admit what was happening because of the fear of the repercussions, yes that may have included losing out on a lucrative contract but I expect that was the last thing on his mind if he was suffering from depression.

This might go some way to explain the Swansea game shenanighans. He was awful in that game. I'll be mightily pissed off if he was depressed then and know one at the club knew about it.

I fully understand mate. I really do. There is no wrong or right way to come to a conclusion on this one. This is a really tough thread for all of us. We all wish Samba well, but in a selfish sort of way we feel cheated. I know it's wrong, and I know we shouldn't be thinking of ourselves, but of course we do don't we? Sadly.

    9s absolutely.
without giving out my biography I come from a position of giving someone a little more empathy than most in this situation.
Unless you have been in a similar situation , yes it's hard to understand.

I think implying duplicity on Diakite's part is extremely harsh and blaming the club's naivety or ignorance is short-sighted.

Even judging from these relatively well meaning posts it's fairly obvious that there's a general lack of understanding of depression in all its forms that still exists in modern society.

I honestly believe he'd get more sympathy from all quarters if he hit the bottle and just played badly.

We don't know the reasons for his depression or whether it's long or short term. It could be anything from a troubled childhood, political unrest in his native Mali, the loss of a loved one, a single event deeply rooted in his past (or even present) or the idea that he's just commited 4 years of his life to a new country and culture in which he is yet to settle (rather than a less permanent and therefore easier to deal with loan).

Hopefully it's the latter because the support of the QPR family would make it a much easier thing to deal with.

He's relatively young and as pointed out above, nobody knows the stigma he might be feeling (or did when he told the club).

He's a terrific player and has my support and best wishes whatever happens.

A very good post Matt. Eloquent as always.

I would say however, that your and Ironman's idea that those of us who are not very sympathetic to the chap have little understanding or experience of depression, is presumptuous in itself. That said, I can see how you might have come to that conclusion given the responses on this thread.

If indeed he is depressed then, no matter how cold this may sound, it matters not to me. There's thousands, indeed millions of people in similar or worse circumstances around the World but don't have the comfort of a US$3 million+ per year contract to ease their sufferings. The only thing that bothers me is what appears to be a mess of a signing which may have a negative impact on the Club this season.

It seems to me that someone has got some explaining to do with regards this matter.

Swords, I am with you on this one. Someone knew about this and did not disclose it when we signed him. Okay buyer beware, but this stinks. I am saying this as a QPR fan through and through although I do have some sympathy for the guy. I do not pretend to understand depression but as soon as it came out that he had a problen it was obvious to me that it was the root of the problem. unfortunitely you dont want to be the first one to say it because of the berating you will get.

Perhaps this latest thing with CR7 at Real Madrid could be similar and not just a contract thing.

Let us hope it will all be done and dusted quickly and we get back the player we signed.
