Pardew has taken a different line I read an article by Steven Taylor about how Pardrew - when he took over the Magpies - started working on the defence separate from the rest of the squad - he personally oversaw the defensive training - drilled them daily for hours about positional training; not just their own, but looking out for each other positions and adjusting to various situations. Once Pardew got the defence sorted out, he moved onto the midfield and did the same about their shape and positional training to support the back-four.

In other words - Pardew recognised that sorting out the defence and the defensive duties of the midfield were paramount to survival in the EPL.

 

Our defence also trains separately. Only know that because Jos jokingly joined the strikers after he'd got a couple of goals.

Any failure to sign a player would be because we are either unwilling to meet their wage demands, unwilling to meet their club's valuation or simply because we are a newly promoted side who many would have tipped for relegation before the season started.
