    From the Chronicle.....

TOON ace Demba Ba has been banned from driving – and rapped by a JP for failing to come to court.

Striker Ba was given a six month ban by magistrates in Northumberland for failing to give police details of who was driving his car when it was twice caught speeding.

The Senegal international failed to attend court – without explanation, having also not appeared at two previous hearings.

The chairman of the bench hit out at the star for failing to show, “yet again”.

Ba, 27, was written to by police in November and asked to provide details of who was driving his car when it was twice caught speeding. Police would not release details of the vehicle involved, locations or speed but did confirm there had been two “speeding offences”.

The former West Ham forward had from November 15 to December 13 to provide the information.

But Ba, who lives in Darras Road in posh Darras Hall in Ponteland, failed to respond.

He was subsequently charged with failing to supply driver information.

Ba was written to and told to appear at Mid and South East Northumberland magistrates on May 17 to answer the charge, but failed to show.

He was given six penalty points on his licence, fined £1,000, told to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

However, it then emerged the fans’ favourite already had six points on his licence.

The case was reopened for re-sentencing due to the possibility of United’s number 19 being banned from driving, as the new six points would take him to 12.

He was due at the Bedlington court on August 1 but again failed to show.

Ba was written to by the court telling him to attend as magistrates were considering the ban.

But he again failed to show, without explanation.

Chairman of the bench Peter Edwards said: “We are satisfied that Mr Ba has failed to attend court yet again.”

Magistrates were told the court “knew nothing” of the player’s means.

They reimposed the original penalty of six points, the £1,000 fine, the £85 contribution to costs and £15 victim surcharge.

He was given 14 days to make his payments. Ba was accordingly banned for six months.

The star has hit the headlines for mainly the right reasons since arriving at United on a free transfer in 2011, after the club triggered a release clause in his West Ham contract following their relegation.

He bagged 15 goals as the Magpies made a fantastic start to last season.

A well publicised release clause in Ba’s contract sparked fears he would leave United in the summer but it expired at the end of July. He scored a stunning goal in United’s season opener at home to Spurs last month.

Even Barton managed to have enough respect to turn up for court hearings.

Ba, it's a load of tosh, he can speak English but he can't read it. They should have sent somebody to his house to explain it to him.

Got off lightly if you ask me. I always thought that refusing to divulge information to the Police about who was driving a vehicle involved in an offence or giving misleading information, were seen as serious offences.

He can well afford the fines and the costs of a driver to cover the six month ban

I wonder if it was you or me involved in a situation like this, the outcome would have been the same?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has banned his players from driving cars from sponsors Chevrolet. United recently signed a multi-million-pound deal with the American car giant, who will become the name on shirts from the start of the 2014-15 season. As a gesture of goodwill, Chevrolet immediately offered United's first-team stars a choice of luxury cars and understandably many of the club's big names plumped for iconic Corvettes.
However, Ferguson immediately intervened and decreed that no player under the age of 23 - no matter their
standing in the team - should be allowed to order a sporty model.
The move is a classic case of Ferguson - the master man-manager - ensuring his young stars don't get too big for
    their boots.
Not suggesting that Pardew should decree what cars our guys can drive, but many young players today are able to afford high performance motors, let's face it even astronomic insurance quotes would not faze them.
The temptation to drive faster than their skill levels and experience would dictate must be a factor, not only in terms of driving offenses but also the danger of having or causing accidents.
My first car was definitely not a top of the range performance model - was yours?

Great move by Fergie. To be honest I fully agree with the comment that Lampard made the other day. The youngsters are getting way too much too soon and it takes the desire out of them.

The £15 victim surcharge is used to fund victim support schemes, you have to pay it and cannot do Community Service as an alternative.
Can you imagine Demba doing a Community Service Order lol

Patrick Vieira has tried to escape a speeding ban by claiming that he did not receive the court summons because the post office had a bad habit of delivering his mail to the wrong addresses in his neighbourhood.
When that excuse failed to impress he then tried to claim that a fan may have stolen the letter from his mailbox.
You gotta hand it to him at least he turned up and tried, one better than our Demba lol
Is speeding a national pastime in Senegal ?
