On Allen - always thought he did the 'tidy' stuff easily. If the opposition give him room he'll spray the ball around all day - accurately. When we play you I can't imagine he'll be given the time on the ball he's enjoyed so far. Press Joe and he's not quite so comfortable, like most players. One other thing - he rarely puts in a killer pass and is often reluctant to try and go past the opposition. He tried it once yesterday and was easily tackled. His stats are excellent because he almost invariably chooses the safer option on his passes. Nothing wrong with that at all and it's something he's done for us for years. I said when the £15M was offered that it was a ridiculous valuation but was necessary as far as Rodgers was concerned because he had to trigger the clause and I stand by that. Don't get me wrong, I don't wish him ill at all and I'm only repeating what I said when he was one of ours. We replaced him with a £2M player who is far more penetrative and has already scored four.
Gerrard always tries the opposite, so we need someone like Allen. He's looked comfortable so far in tight spaces, skipping away from players. He has a lot of potential to get better in the final third too. To our team he is easily worth £15M, already. You didn't replace him with Michu - Michu was already at the club and is a completely different type of midfielder. He will, obviously, be a good buy, if he keeps up his early form. Fair comment though
I saw Ivor Allchurch play many times and he was a class above Ian Rush in my opinion. His brother Len wasn't bad either! John Charles was the best Welsh forward of all time though, not much doubt about that.
So lets not base it on goals for Wales, trophies won or anything pertinent lets base it on the fact that you saw Charles and the Allchurche's and your judgement matters above career achievements.
Bit of a harsh start for Liverpool . West Brom & Arsenal look the real deal &Man City are the title holders . All roads for Rodgers lead to December , I can see Liverpool sneaking into a European spot by next window . Also Borini will come good , with a bit of service . Give it time gents , that's a fair looking team you have there
I hope you are right, I really do. But even then, we don't have the attacking options to put on the bench. We are well covered in midfield and decent in defence, but we have Morgan and Yesil who have barely hit puberty up front. Even if we got MO, he isn't exactly going to bang them in every week.
The treacherous little **** is 32, how will JH get around that one when Dempsey was seen as to old at 29, don't forget Mikey would want mega-bucks wages for signing for us on a free.
I hear Hernan Crespo is up for grabs ... Alessandro Del Pieiro is currently talking with an Austrailian side - still technically a free agent ...
Hes told Stoke he wants a 2 year deal worth £1.5m a season. But yeah pay as you play(or as Zingy said pay as you score)would take preference over a 2 year contract.
I think at this stage in his career Owen will get what he's damn well given, that or it's the punditry gallows for him, and he's not exactly blessed with charisma...
I did say in my opinion! One player winning more trophies than another doesn't necessarily mean that player is a better player, it just means that the player plays for a better team. The Liverpool team that Rush played for was a better team than the Swansea, Newcastle and Cardiff teams that Allchurch played for, hence more trophies won. Neither player won anything with Wales but Allchurch was part of the only Welsh team ever to qualify for the finals of the World Cup in 1958. Rush scored 5 more goals for Wales than Allchurch did (in 5 more appearances) but Allchurch lost 4 years playing time due to national service. In any case Allchurch was a different kind of player to Rush, most of his goals were scored from outside the box. He passed the ball better than Rush and created more chances for other players. As for John Charles, in 1997, as part of the Juventus Centenary celebrations, the club held a poll of their fans to decide the club's greatest ever foreign player. John Charles was the runaway winner, ahead of Platini, Michael Laudrup etc etc. I'm not sure what position Ian Rush came in the poll, maybe you know?
So you don't think Rushie's achievements as part of a Liverpool team prove anything but you do think that Allchurch being part of a team that qualified for a finals does, flawed logic there tony because i could say that Rushie played for a poorer Welsh side than Allchurch. Many of Liverpool's trophy wins were directly due to Ian Rushies skill and goal scoring ability and for you to suggest he couldn't pass a ball or score from outside the box is laughable. As for John Charles, i knew already that he was voted greatest ever foreign player by the Juve support, Rush was only there 9 months before coming back 'home', but if we cant use trophies won or the Welsh scoring record that leaves us with your opinion and your welcome to it mate.
DragQueen. If you're going to embarrass Swans fans over here can you at least learn the difference between a 'role' and a 'roll'. I don't think Gerrard would be interested in a 'coaching roll'. He might do, if he or anyone else knew what it was. Thanks.
