    Team:

Davis 6 - He may have saved a penalty but it could have been so easily avoided if he had just belted it rather than try a long pass to someone...

Clyne 6 - Had a decent game, apart from his slip for van Persie's first.

Fonte 5 - Started so well and the more the game went on the more desperate things became and they seem to lose focus

Hooiveld 5 - Another pen given away, no need to slide...

Fox 5 - Has some good moments, but does get caught out a lot, as was proved for the cross leading to the equaliser.

Davis 6 Had a good game, didn't notice much wrong.

Ward-Prowse 7 - Another excellent game for the youngster who seems to be in the right places at the right times.

Schneiderlin 8 - His first home goal! And he made the interception leading to Lambert's goal. My MOTM today! <applause>

Lallana 7 - Decent touches and moves, roaming around well as ever. Would just like to see him shout around a bit more at his team mates.

Puncheon 7 - Had a good game today, just always seems slow to counter attack.

Lambert 7 - Good header but lets face it, it was always going to be tough against two of the best CB's in the league...

    SUBS:

    Rodriguez - not enough time.

Mayuka - didn't see enough of him.

    Guly - Same as above...

    Tactics:

Couldn't understand why Mayuka (who is supposedly quicker and smaller than Guly) was made to play as a long striker. Should've been the other way round....

    To come later.....

Davis 5 - his passing was terrifying but did little wrong handling-wise.
Clyne 6 - Looked good going forward and an excellent tackle to deny Chicarito.
Fonte 5 - A couple of decent defensive headers but rushed and scary clearances too.
Hooiveld 6 - Daft penalty to concede, but the steadier of the two CBs.
Fox 5 - Don't like to criticise our players too much, but I thought he looked slow and a little out of his depth. Here's hoping Shaw progresses quickly.
Davis 7.5 - Excellent in the first half. Steadying influence and doesn't lose the ball much.
    Ward-Prowse 7.5 - About a 9 if you consider he's only 17. Doesn't look out of place at all.
Schneiderlin 9 - Oozed quality. Some fantastic passes and very good positioning. Bossed the midfield until Scholes came on to change the game.
    Lallana 7.5 - Always threatened.
Puncheon 8 - Worked tirelessly and threatened continuously.
Lambert 8 - Will win flick ons and headers against anyone in this league. Essential for a 433.

Subs - we had started defending so deep when the subs came on it was very tough for them. 3 6's.

    Davis 4

Clyne 6 (Would be a 7 if he had the right boots on)

    Fonte 5

    Hooiveld 4

    Fox 5

    Davis 7

    Ward Prowse 8

Schneiderlin 9 (All midfield ratings before we gave up on the game and sat back for 20 minutes)

Lallana 6 (Harsh maybe, movement was fantastic, great tempo, really dangerous, but shooting was far below-par and missed out on a couple of killer balls)

    Lambert 7

    Puncheon 8 (Really surprised me)

Subs weren't involved in the game so no point rating them.

Nigel I'm afraid has to get a 5 because the substitutions and tactical changes cost us the game. Still believe in him and know that he will learn from this and move on.

Davis 7 - If he hadn't of saved the penalty it would have been lower, took some risky throws but overall a decent performance.

Clyne 7 - Dealt with Kagawa and Welbeck perfectly. Also did his best with Nani. However he did slip (probably not his fault) which gifted united their first goal and nearly gifted them another with another slip.

Fonte 6 - Why all the harsh marks? He played okay won about 60% of his headers and was very good against the best striker in the league.

Hooiveld 5 - Gave away a rash penalty and didn't win as much in the air as he should have.

Fox 4 - Sod the corners and the free kicks his positional sense is APPALLING the only reason he didn't get a 2 is because Valencia would expose any left back.

Davis 8 - Calm and composed nothing spectacular but helped dominate United's midfield.

Ward-Prowse 9 - Much the same as Davis but offered more going forward some nice flicks and didn't give anyone any time.

Schneiderlin 10 - Perfect. He tackled perfectly, Intercepted constantly, played gorgeous passes both short and long AND scored a goal.

Lallana 8 - Lots of good effort and trickery, knackered by the end though.

Puncheon 7 - Bit slow and times but a very good game on the whole.

Lambert 8 and a half - Constantly pushed and pulled by Ferdinand and Vidic but got the better of them a hell of a lot and took his goal well, as well as setting up Schneiderlin's.

Personaly I rated him low because he was marking Van Persie for the 3rd goal and got no where near him. In that situation all he would need to do is be in his vicinity to put him off enough to misplace that kind of header. And because he continually hoofed the ball into touch (not even well, most of them went out for throws in our half) late in the game when we could have been launching counter attacks, which just piled the pressure on us until we buckled.

Other than that though, I agree, thought he had a good game.

Hooiveld is definitely having a problem getting too close to strikers and trying to win tackles he has very little chance of winning. Several times in the game he followed Van Persie very tightly when he pulled out of the front line, leaving gaps in behind which could have cost us. And given away two penalties with silly challenges.

Really hope Yoshida can slot in and make a difference. I'm not one of the drama llamas who goes on about our defence meaning we're certain for relegation, but its certainly looking like an issue so far.

    Davis 5
Clyne 6 - his first 20 minutes were quite poor otherwise 7
Fonte 6 - the winner was his fault sure, but I thought he was the better CB
Hooiveld 5 - didn't win as much in the air as I'd hope and gave away a sloppy pen
Fox 5 - disappointing. Tried to be too clever at times but then he was up against Valencia
Davis 7 - played well. Nothing spectacular but I don't remember him giving the ball away
Ward-Prowse 7 - Turning into a very tidy player! Considering he's 17 and was up against a Man Utd midfield, he played very well.
Schneiderlin 9 - Controlled the midfield up until we took our best players off then he had no options. Played his trademark scooped pass too :)
Lallana 7 - Bad shooting and missed some potential cutting passes but a smart player on the ball and always getting involved.
Puncheon 8 - Best I've seen him play for a long time. Ran his socks off. Can't tackle though - doesn't get in front of the player.
Lambert 8 - So clever on the ball along with a goal and an assist. Faded towards the end as he obviously became tired.

You nicked my normal thread RLGB <laugh>

    Anyway, onto my ratings:

Kelvin Davis - 7, Saved a penalty and made 2 superb saves throughout the game.

Nathaniel Clyne - 7, Very good signing who linked up well with Puncheon down the right.
Jose Fonte - 6, Started off very well but faded and was at fault for one of the goals.
Jos Hooiveld - 7, Solid as a rock at the back and can't fault him. (Other than the penalty I suppose)
Danny Fox - 5, I really wish we signed a new LB over the summer.

Steven Davis - 9, Superb play with a good range of passing and positional movement was outstanding.
James Ward-Prowse - 9, Does anything faze this youngster? Another composed and mature performance.
Morgan Schneiderlin - 10 MOTM, Didn't put a single foot wrong today. Got stuck in and contributed massively. Very impressive.

Jason Puncheon - 7, Very energetic and was linking up very well with Clyne.
Rickie Lambert - 8, Great header and was continually causing a nuisance to the United back-line.
Adam Lallana - 9, This guy was class today and he suits the wing so much better than the middle.

Not going to rate the subs as they didn't really contribute, but Adkins is a 2/10 - sorry but he cocked up big time with the subs today

    Just back from the game...
    Davis 6
    Clyne 8
    Fonte 6
    Hooiveld 7
    Fox 6
    Ward-prowse 8
    Schneiderlin 9
    Davis 8
    Lallana 8
    Lambert 8
    Puncheon 9
    Mayuka 6
    Rodriguez 6
    Guly 6

Really pleased with our performance. The first ten minutes we were being ripped apart but after that up until half time, we dominated large areas of the game. We absolutely dominated the second half up until when the subs started to be used. Three of our best four players on the pitch were taken off and the subs did hardly anything. I think Rodriguez should have been swapped around with Mayuka, or even bring on Lee instead of Rodriguez and maybe put Guly up front on his own. The subs were made too early and the one player we needed to bring on with his high work ethic was Lee, but that wasn't the case today.

Yoshida better be good because Fonte is a nightmare at times, and I wish we bought in another left back-Fox reminds me of a slightly better defender than Harding with an amazing cross.

We need to have the same desire in the big games than the small times. Coming away from a game like this with a loss by a goal is quite acceptable, but against any team in the bottom half we need to win a lot of these games at home.

Davis - 5 (Poor distribution, penalty save was easy but saved him from getting a 4)

Clyne - 6 (Needs to learn he's not Ronaldinho)
Fonte - 6 (Erratic but he won't come up against a better striker until the return leg)
Hooiveld - 4 (Idiotic tackle for the penalty, I can see him doing that far too often)
Fox - 5 (Normally a fan but his positional sense was a mess today)

JWP - 7 (Solid, very composed for 17. Could see he was totally in awe when Scholes was on the ball)
Schneiderlin - 9 (His best performance for us since he arrived - top notch)
Davis - 7 (Very tidy, didn't really put a foot wrong)

Puncheon - 8 (Class player, I've said it all along, its funny how fickle people are on here. He was still being slated for not being good enough pre season, his ability isn't a question)
Lallana 7 - (Neat touches, few nice bits of skill and off the ball running. Really needs to learn how to shoot)
Lambert 8 - (Strong performance, good goal. Gave their back 4 a very tough time)

Davis - 5 - Yes, a penalty save but he caused it by a sloppy pass.

    Clyne - 6 - Meeeh, slipped.
    Fonte - 5 - Panicked too much.
Hooiveld - 6 - our best defender today.
    Fox - 4 - Poor.

    JWP - 5 - Wasn't impressed.
    Davis - 7 - OK performance.
    Schneiderlin - 11 - Absolute class.
    Lallana - 8 - Very good.
Puncheon - 9 - Very surprised by his performance, quality.

Lambert - 8 - Frightened the Utd CB's. Very good.

    Subs:

    Brought the wrong players on.

We played a stormer today . Ive had a man crush on morgan since we signed him and proved what a class act he is becoming. Fonte wasn't terrible .......we wont be under the cosh like that every week.

However if our constantly LB stands 10 yards off anyone looking to put a cross into our box, that will cause us serious problems.

    We will be fine.

Don't think Steve Davis played that well tbh, gave it away a fair few times. JWP, Lallana, Lambert, schniederlin, puncheon stand out players.

Davis - 4 (A few dreadful passes and seemed slow to get down/across to a couple of shots. Yelled angrily at the Northam after saving the pen.. was he getting stick for the pass that led to the penalty being awarded? I love the guy and recognise that he can be a great shot-stopper, but he doesn't instill me with the greatest amount of confidence.)

Clyne - 6 (Can't blame him too much for the slip. We all know that he likes to get forward, but I think he's a very good one-on-one defender as well. Runs into blind alleys at times when he bombs forward but been extremely impressed with him so far.)

Fonte - 6 (He's been shaky for a while now but I thought he was the better of our centre halves today. A few panicky clearances but generally dealt OK with some world-class forwards. It seems a bit fashionable to hate on Fonte right now.)

Hooiveld - 5 (Silly and unnecessary tackle for the penalty. Good in the air as always but he does seem to stay far too tight to opposing strikers at time which opens up a lot of space behind him.)

Fox - 3 (His positional sense is atrocious for a professional footballer. The amount of times that he got sucked into the middle leaving Valencia with the freedom of the right wing was just staggering. Don't feel confident when he's one-one-one with wingers either. Worries me a lot and I can see opposition teams starting to exploit him.)

Schneiderlin - 9 (I really feel like he came of age today. We've seen him do it against lower league teams, but to boss United's midfield like he did today was a joy to watch. Still only 22 as well!)

Davis - 7 (Solid. Kept the ball, stayed calm and provides much needed experience alongside JWP and Morgan. Good going forward and defensively. Think he's going to be a massively important player for us.)

Ward-Prowse - 6 (He's going to be a tremendous player - just doesn't seem fazed by anything whilst also coming across as down-to-earth and willing to learn. If we take off the rose-tinted specs and forget the fact that he's only 17 and a local lad, I felt like he gave the ball away a bit too often today - hence the 6.)

Puncheon - 8 (Ramirez is going to have to work to get into the team if Puncheon keeps playing like this. Made some great runs and a fantastic cross for Lambert's goal.)

Lallana - 6.5 (Great movement and intelligent runs as always, but still has to improve his end product if he's going to become a top player. Fluffed a few shots and crosses after working hard to get into good positions.)

Lambert - 8 (Vidic was really struggling to deal with him. Deserved his goal, but he's so much more than just a goal-scorer. Looks to have made the step up with relative ease. Such a shame he wasted so many years in the lower leagues when you consider some of the donkeys who have been playing top flight football for most of their careers.)
