His prefered position is RB. He has played there most of his career for both us and Republic of Ireland.

He's either a CB who can play RB, or a RB who can play CB, either way the relevent point is that he can play CB and Rosenior can only play right back (or left back). When a team is playing with 3 CBs and no RBs in the side, a player who can play CB is going to be selected for the squad ahead of a player who can only play RB.

I think this is just a case of a manager bringing his own players in. Happens all the time and perfectly good players will get pushed out. I doubt Brucie thought Rosie was a weak link, just Elmo, one of his players, became available so he signed him up.

Charlie has a point, I'd play Rosenior ahead of McShane in absolutely every position.

I was concerned about this too but at least now we know that nearly every position has at least two good players challenging and competing with each other, it's the same with centre mid, we've got Evans, Oli, McKenna, Cairney and Koren who can play their, at centre back we've got Faye, Chester, Bruce, Cooper, McShane and Hobbs when fit, in full back we've got Dudgeon, Dawson, Townsend, Rosenior and Elmo. I think this is a good thing, it means players will have to work very hard to earn a place in the team, a place in a football team is a luxury that has to be earned not a right gifted easily.

    Agree with Ricardo here.

Whilst the 352 in use, it could be a tough time for Liam. However, the squad as it is now does provide options, and Bruce could have a plan B or even C that would utilise Rosie.

I hope he isn't on the bench for most of the season, as I think he's class, but I think he's gonna have to be patient for a while.

Just like Wayne Rooney was on the bench for Man Utd last week. Rested. Far too much has been made of this. Not only is Rosie our only right full back of quality he is the best right full back in the championship.

Rosie HAD NO PRE-SEASON and then came back and played Rotherham - Brighton - Blackburn and Charlton. He did well but after the Fryatt injury Steve Bruce is wise to give him a rest. You can only play 11 at a time and now Bruce is getting a squad that has options and from the bench which is something we lacked badly last season once Barmby retired from playing.

Rosie will be fine. I applaud the decison actually to leave him out. It was brave and we got away with it against Bolton.

Is rosenior really one of our best players though? I'm not saying he is bad but his passing and crossing is awful at times. In this current formation there is no way he can be given a place in the team. Fair enough when we go back to 442 he should come back in as he is the best right back we have got but I don't think he is a good enough player that we can afford to have him in the team even when he won't fit into the system.

I'm not quite sure where the whole rosenior love in has come from. Is it just because he comes across very well to the media? He knows how to say the right things to please people by telling them what they want to hear ill give him that!

I know I'll get slated for this but it's just my opinion that he isn't as good as a lot of you seem to think he is and he certainly isn't an indispensable member of the team!

I think Rosie tackles well and can run at teams and feelhe could do a job from bench in midfield. I would certainly have put him on in central midfield ahead of mcshane yesterday.
As for Cooper I think he is making a mistake not going to pompey. Doing well there could have given him another contract with City. No first team appearances anywhere = the exit door which would be sad because I still believe he is avery good prospect.

    This ^^

Elmo is more of a threat going forward with better delivery.

The natural thing would be to interchange the 2 players depending on how the game is panning out and use Rosenior if a bit more defensive ability is needed if we're ahead or under the cosh.

Macshane is just pointless at the moment other than as a squad player.

Also, if we had played Bolton with McKenna or Cairney in midfield we would not have scored that third goal as Quinn is the first forward thinking midfield player we have had for sometime.

i agree, quality right back but very wasteful going forward, said before yesterday game id have no complaints if he was dropped in this new system, nobody should be guaranteed a place in the team and its great to have some strength in the squad...if fryatt makes the millwall game, we could have 2 of our best players from last year on the subs bench and neither could complain after yesterday, thats a good postion to be in rather then having the likes of cullen and devitt to come on

I imagine Rosie will be challenging Elmo and Dudge for most of the season for either one of the wingback roles. He'll get chances be it from injury, suspension, ,a drop in form, or simply personal preference. If we have injuries to Quinn and more centre mids, Elmo may me moved forward to play that sort of role as a wide midfielder as well, leaving Rosie to be a wingback. I'd be more worried if I was Daws, who does not fit the wingback role. It appears like he'll be an auxiliary centre half and get a game in the 3rd round of the FA cup before we get knocked out.

I think it likely that rosenior will bea better option away from home when we won't be expected to attack as much as we did yesterday.

The question mark over rosenior has always been his ability to deliver a decent ball into the box. If he could regularly get quality balls in the box then added to his defensive skills, he wouldn't be playing for us he's be playing regularly in the premier league.

Have any of you thought that Bruce may change the formation away from home. I think he will revert to four at the back for away games and therefore I think thats is when Rosie will play. It wont be such an attacking formation as it is at home.

I'd say it's fairly certain it's going to be our standard formation from now on, unless things start going wrong. In interviews he keeps saying he thinks it's the best formation to allow Koren and two strikers on the pitch at the same time.

Under the new system your fullbacks are wingbacks and you'd want them to be decent crossers of a ball as they're expected to be more attacking.. so I see why Elmo got picked (regardless of being a Bruce player).

McShane can't cross for toffee, I too would pick Rosie ahead of him on the right or the left (see OLM) if it came to that but we have our best fullback on the left anyway & that's Dudgeon. But perhaps the case about McShane being able to switch to CB in a re-shuffle (see Ricardo) is the thinking & so he's on the bench.

Dudgeon' s a solid tackler, possesses a good long throw and is younger than the others.
