Sunderland AFC News And Banter Page:

SUNDERLAND are not expected to pursue an interest in either Clint Dempsey or Michael Dawson in the current transfer window. Despite feverish speculation in the media and at the bookies yesterday on Dempsey coming to the Stadium of Light, the Echo understands that neither player is on the club’s radar in the wake of the Black Cats spending £22million to bring Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson to the club last Friday.

Dempsey is in limbo at Fulham, having said he doesn’t want to play for the club any more. The American was anticipating a dream move to Liverpool this summer, but that now looks on the verge of collapse. Fulham have reported Liverpool to the FA for an illegal approach and the Merseyside outfit are beginning to distance themselves from a proposed £8m move for the player.

Sunderland were said to have stepped up their interest in Dempsey yesterday, looking to take advantage of the uncertain situation at Craven Cottage. But £8m for Dempsey and a similar figure for Spurs centre-half Dawson – in areas of the pitch where Martin O’Neill feels the club are well-served – does not really make sense. Both players would also want wages that would require a huge financial commitment from Sunderland and with the Black Cats having already splashed out more than £20m, more big signings in central midfield and central defence are highly unlikely when the main priority is to find a specialist left-back.

that sounds about right to me, particularly re Dawson. If wes brown's injury is not long term, don't see the point in signing dawson.
As for dempsey, he's a class act but at 29, he'd be looking for one last massive contract and I'm not convinced it's the right thing to do, especially when you then think about team shape. Don't see how dempsey, fletch and sess fit together with jimmy mac and AJ

    Makes sense to me.

We need a left back, cover for right back and another striker imo.

Get those in and we will be well sorted

Thats very good Spin from the club, lets hope we get exactly what Martin O Neill wants and not what the speculators are saying, i still believe that Dempsey would be a cracking signing and we may see some activity with others going in the opposite direction.

We mys trust in Martin O Neil, cometh the hour cometh the man

I think Dempseys turned us down, Liverpool will sign him in the eleventh hour. He's obviously holding out for them.

There was too much smoke to this for it not to be true.

Not overly concerned just a reality check that its still tough to attract players even though we signed AJ.

Or we are making progress with another target.

Can't wait till Saturday when I can stop second guessing who we are signing, doing my head in.

I don't think Dempsey has turned us down, more that the link to him was given legs by the 'who next, worlds our oyster' attitude after the AJ signing.

Great player that Dempsey is, and Dawson, we genuinely DON'T need them, although I'd love both.

Cest is right, for once in his life ;)

A left back, and MAYBE another striker, I say maybe cos I fancy Ji this season, and honestly believe Saha will do a job, and we've had a great window.

If we sign more, it's just a bonus.

Testament to our faith in the club that we've all just shrugged this off!

We will be back to square one if Fletcher gets injured..or is Wickam as reports say looking sharp enough to trust him as a replacement................i think we need another striking option and a left back and a creative midfielder..........taxi for jenas?.................lets say we are playing with fletcher and aj in the team but getting beat 1-0 with 20 minutes to go..who on the bench would put the fear into the oposition....ji, wickam, or saha? saha is good but he wont last all season without getting injured!and he is an old fella!

Our squad is still very thin in the quality department for a top 8 pushand we would need luck to help us and i dont know about you but i dont think MON would rely on luck( unless he sees a genuine role for ji and wickam ) so i expect at least two more signings. If we dont sign anybody and lose richardson it will be a bloody long season playing very tight and not the most entertaining football.Remember MON did say he wanted more exiting players so he could change the style of play to be more entertaining as he must realise watching defensive ansd scoring on the break football is not what brings the crowds in.

Glass half full:aj and fletcher do lighten the load but they are still diamonds in the rough but our first eleven does look much better than last year so finger crossed!hold on a minute fingers crossed is not really a great way to go into a premiership season is it!who drank my beer?

I am still looking forward to our season in hope as sometimes good things come to folk who wait and to be fair weve waited longer than most!

Can't argue with that really, I'd certainly be more comfortable with an extra striker.

    Bendtner's still available.... <whistle>

Chimera are you joking about Jenas?
The Spuds fans were gutted they weren't getting rid last week.

I don't rate him and if his own fans don't rate him, I don't want him. :p
