first time on here in a long time.. Cant understand why we would be willing to pay 8m for a player who is desperate to get out of club, and who club dont want especially when they are after Richardson who is also in the last year of his contract but only being touted as 2m, would be happy to sign him with 23 goals from last season. But only for around 2m with Richardson going the other way.. But we need a left back in first. Still think Sunderland have struggled for many years with Central Midfield we need an attacking midflelder with some vision as we have (too) many midfielders who in my opinion are very similar, ie Catts/Meyler/Colback/vaughan. Could be a stop gap answer in Benayoun who we could get on the cheap and would add the flair we need in midfield. Any thoughts??
If you managed to get Dempsey for 8million that's an absolute snatch! Are you mad? Sunderland would make half the 8million back in shirt sales in North America alone.
Agree and it seems we are distancing ourselves from him & Dawson so no worries with the fee. But would be a cracking signing.
I reckon he is worth £20 m in todays transfer market, but we need that strong 'get at them' left back first, in fact if Catts could play in defence he would be ideal. There will be a huge gate tonight for the Morecambe game as i was in a long que and it was still forming at about 11.15 am after i got my ticket this morning!. and if we got Dempsey my god we would be fantastic up front.
VERY good point from the Mag on the shirt sales in America! A foothold in the biggest retail market in the world is worth a packet! Shame they don't have a decent left back!
His goals alone make him worth double that fee and then you've got the north American merchandising as has already been mentioned. If and I'm starting to think now it's a big IF we manage to get Dempsey for 8 million we have pulled off a major coup. If you listen to the rumours, AJ signed because of the ambition we're showing in the transfer market and we are to expect at least one more marquee signing. But I really believe it will be another striker and it won't be anybody we've spoken about on here and one we will all probably fall off our seats for.
It is fair to say that AJ statement doesn't seem to be about Fletcher, Strinic, Olsson or Cuellar. There's gonna be somebody.
Strange to say that though, as if that was the case you would trawl the world for players who would sell shirts and not necessarily add much to your squad, of which the mags have had a few Kluivert, Owen et al. I think Dempsey is a good player (similar to sess and campbell) however before last season he wasnt a striker who would have topped anyone shopping list and bearing in mind he scored 33 league goals in 147 appearances he wasnt prolific. But is he could add another 10 to 15 to the score list then 8 million is probs a fair price!!
I think he's worth every dime of £8million (like what I did there, eh, eh). Wages though, 50k? Thereabouts, 3 year contract. That's a lot of wedge for a 29 year old.
Was his interview when he signed, something along the lines of 'you can see the club means business by the calibre of the players they've brought in, and are looing to bring in...' Sounds like he was given an idea that another big name was in the pipeline.
The world as a whole is changing and football as a business is very fluid. FFP has meant that each football club has to increase its revenue streams and branch out into advertising and merchandising like never before, if they don't they will get left behind. The financial gap between the worlds top clubs is already huge and every player is an asset. As a business before purchasing an asset you need to look at everything it brings to the table to benefit you. The Clint Denpsey's of the world will bring you merchandising in the US but will also bring you goals on the pitch that potentially push you further up the table bringing you yet more money.. We have a very sound business minded board room and if we go for Dempsey at 8m the board will have already done the maths to predict his return on that investment..
I wouldn't be worried about that vince.. Some games we are going to want a very attacking midfield and other games we'll want a holding centre mid. I'd be more worried if I was Vaughan meyler and catts. Dempsey can play as a holding centre mid did that for years and is good at it.
He's definitely worth £8 million. Is he the best way for us to spend £8 million? That's a tough one and depends on how much we have left to spend.
Dempsey is worth every penny imo. He may desperately want to leave but Fulham certainly dont have to sell. He will be worth just as much in January if they hang on and wont have to pay him wages if he strikes. They cant lose tbh and any buying club will have to pay his value.
