Disappointment is the word that probably sums up how most Liverpool fans feel after this weekend. Time was spent discussing how we would do this new season, could we get into the top four? Who would we sign? How will the new manager do? The excitement was building and we waited for all the answers. Saturday evening was not what we expected, it had all gone wrong the script was terrible and Liverpool fans were all doom and gloom once more. In all honesty WBA played well Zoltan Geras goal was unstoppable. There was an element of fortune in the penalties but they got the ball down and played and even if we had 11 men on the pitch they may well have got the points. It's not all bad though and we have to dust ourselves down and look forward, the style of play that Rodgers wants was evident for periods and we looked good on the ball. Joe Allen gave us a glimpse of what he can do and Suarez was a threat in the first half. There are quality players in our team throughout and they need to recover from this and move on, a win against Hearts would give us confidence and enable us to go into the first home game of the season with new hope. Playing Manchester City at Anfield in our next league game is just what we need, a big game to galvanise and inspire players and fans alike, we can't shy away from the current champions we need to meet them head on. I'd like to say that we need to give Rodgers and his methods time but we simply don't have it, the players need to make this a steep learning curve, they need to concentrate and work hard we don't have the luxury of time. If we get 3 points against City then we will all feel so much better and the gloom will be lifted, if we don't then we pick ourselves up and go again. This may be a difficult season but then again it could be a great one. After one game of football nothing is set in stone and as we know more than most believing and never giving up can take you on some incredible journeys. Walk on redmen this chapter of the story has only just begun.
Yes good post although i'm hoping Carra will be alright on Sun against City's great attack Really hoping Aguero stays injured mate
It was disappointing but I can still see some positive signs. Up until the first goal (which came out of nothing), it was pretty even and we played some decent football. We are still creating good chances but still failing to convert. I like Joe Allen - he definately gives us some more composure in the middle and his passing was crisp. We just need some more quicker thinking players around him. We are still making the same mistakes though - failing to get enough bodies in the box, not converting chances and dropping our heads when we concede first. I'm hoping BR still has a couple of more players lined before the end of the week ...
Very early days indeed, Utd were beat by Everton last night, their season isn't exactly over ! they will be up there battling for the title end of season no doubt. We just have to stay in around the clubs like Newcastle, Spurs, Arsenal & not let them get too far away from us. As it happens Spurs lost, Arsenal drew and Newcastle won. Newcastle obviously had the best result against a direct rival, Arsenal dropped points at Home & we lost away. In the grand scheme of things, not a totally unexpected result, I would have had that down as a draw personally, so I believe we only dropped a point. Where as Arsenal dropped 2 with a home match v Sunderland. And no disrespect to Newcastle, but I would rather they won than Spurs, as they are due their 2 top strikers jetting of to the ACON in the not too distant future and more likely to drop points in that period. Giving our tough start to the season fixtures wise, the closer we are to these Clubs after it has past, the more chance we have of bettering our rivals results once its finished. Slightly playing the percentages there but all we have to go on at the moment. And without making too many excuses, West Brom away is not a easy fixture, our rivals for the 4th spot will find that out this season. Plenty to be optimistic about.
If we'd work hard and apss the thing i'd be happy. if is see guys wandering about carrying the abll for 4/5 touches and 60 yard passes cross field v city i won't be happy.
Everyone else stalled at the weekend, except City who are not our rivals. That was a good result for us because I wouldn't want to face City after a loss. Can't see us winning on Sunday though.
I can, we'll get chances as in any game. There won't be as many though that's for sure so we need to sort out the wasted opportunities and start scoring them.
I hope we can raise our game and get something from them, it's our first home game so I hope the lads will be up for it.
This is exactly how I feel, we can all make allowances for bad luck, crap refs, opposition wonder goals etc....... but you cannot excuse a lack of hard work and having the right attitude in the vein of Suarez. This part is what worries me most as a Liverpool fan!
It was a very good strike but I wouldn't say it was unstoppable, no goal is unavoidable. We could have had a defender outside the six yard box to make it quicker to close Gera down. Hell, we could have avoided giving them the corner in the first place. But as I said, it was a good goal I fear Rodgers will stick to is football philosophy. IMO, playing football against Man City will be suicide We have to have it, there is no other option
Southampton showed us that you can hurt City by attacking them and by playing football. I don't expect us to be sitting back and letting City do all the work - we're at home, we have some good players and we want the win.
Good point on Southampton but you have to bear in mind that that game was the biggest of all their players careers. Most newly promoted teams put in a massive fight on the opening day, hence clubs not wanting to draw done of them on the opening day when the fixture lists are published
True. Either way - Man City are coming to Anfield. We expect 3 points no matter what and I'm confident we will raise our game. The players need to believe. Our confidence has really taken a battering over the past seasons and it's almost we're resigned to drawing or losing.
I'd put the words 'try' and 'for' in there pal I never expect us to win as you have to earn three points, but I do expect us to try our best to get them
To expand on what I mean there, we don't have time to be languishing in mid table the players need to learn quickly and get to a certain standard as soon as possible. Yes Rodgers needs time to implement his ideas but the players need to work hard at understanding them and get to an acceptable level quickley.
Agreed, but what I meant was if that doesn't happen and we end up languishing mid-table (or god forbid, worse) than the answer isn't to sack the manager either
Yeah I totaly agree, we have to deal with whatever happens and just back Rodgers into the next season. I'm still sure he will do well though.
I honestly can't see a problem with playing football against City. We're well capable of winning, all we need to do is put them on the back foot and hit them with bombs. Andt Carroll would be very useful in a game like this. If it were me, I would go with a Borini,Carroll, Suarez front three.
Carroll would be my choice. That is it! No 'against City' or 'for this game', he would just be my choice. IMO, Suarez, Borini and Carroll looks a damn site stronger than Suarez, Borini and Downing!
