    Hughes: Loss a ´wake-up call´ for QPR
    19 August 2012

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes labelled his team's 5-0 loss to Swansea City 'embarrassing'.

Michu and Nathan Dyer both struck braces and Scott Sinclair completed the rout at Loftus Road on the opening day of the English Premier League season.

Hughes, whose team just avoided relegation last season, said the heavy defeat would serve as a wake-up call to his players.

"If you're not careful it can be embarrassing if you're two or three behind and you're chasing the game," he said.

    "It was certainly that."

Michael Laudrup's Swansea have also been tipped to struggle this season but were impressive, particularly in the second half when they netted four times.

Hughes was making no excuses for his team after the loss and said they needed to improve.

"A number of individuals did OK but the team performance was nowhere near where it needed to be," he said.

"You can make all the excuses you want, but it doesn't wash with me. It's unacceptable and highlights there are players who are not where they need to be.

"We chased the game when we didn't have to. We became ragged and made bad decisions. We're desperately disappointed with that.

"In the end we didn't deserve anything from the game so we have to improve remarkably. We've been riding on the crest of good will, but we fell flat on our faces. It is a wake-up call for us."

Laudrup hailed the victory a confidence boost his team needed to start the season, admitting all clubs carried doubts heading into a new campaign.

"It's just the thing we needed - to start like that," the Dane said.

"Confidence is very important and you could already see it in the players in the last third of the game because everybody - every player and manager and club - starts a new season a little doubtful.

"I also know that Swansea is no longer a surprise to anyone because everybody analysed them last season."

The result is a wake up call and MH is spot on IMO about how the game panned out ... A collective effort chased the game and lost shape very quickly.

We were not useless and going forward our stats looked good but goals win matches I understand that

The bile on this forum is from people who cannot lose with dignity when things go wrong

I am disgusted more with the outrage as I am with the result ... I was not disappointed with our first half play at all in fact anyone who knows football could see we were very strong indeed and craved open Swansea ... I am certain we will build on that because I think we actually looked as strong as we have done for a long while
This will be the best ranger team for a long while IMO

Second half we looked very ragged and were picked off very easy

We have to hope now we put in a very solid away performance.

Loftus road will become a fortress again no doubt in my mind

I said it yesterday and I'll say it again. There are alot of people (management and players) who have bought into TF's "project". They say that it is really exciting and they want to to be part of it. But they must remember that it is not a free ride. They have to make it happen on the pitch. That means concentrating and doing their jobs. Yesterday, too many didn't do that.

Fair point Eamon. I said in another thread I'm beginning to think the 'long term project' sales pitch is breeding complacency. If you want to succeed then join us for the ride when he should be saying work your f***ing a** off because if you don't we'll be in the dumps and so will you.

I went to the game yesterday and thought QPR were brilliant in the first half. Bare with my spelling but I thought Mackie had a cracking game. Holliett and Tarabat also had decent games.

I said to my mate half time that we had been playing with the sun in our eyes and would be interesting to see if the second half was different.

And I think that combined with early season fitness lacking a bit - we hammered it home second half.

Bit of a shame to see fighting outside the ground afterwards there's no need of it. Outside the dartboard I think the pub was called.

If yesterday's result jolts them into reality and we make progress from it then it will have been a worthwhile and, more importantly, humbling experience. As some have said, best it happened now rather than later in the season. Two weeks of the window left and a central defender is priority...

Agree with some of the statements. This could be an early turning point, where the players gel as a team and work hard together to turn things around. It's what we all expect to happen from any team with spirit and self respect.
Onwards to some honest work this week from the team and to the weekend for a bloody improved performance.
Looking for the sort of reaction that drove ManU after their humiliation to Citeh!

Even though i idolized sparky as a player i have never rated him as a manager and yesterdays result shows that you can buy loads of good players put them on high wages...(compared to us) but if the manager is not that good then you will have problems. last season on the last day you were lucky that results went your way to stay up. I think qpr under sparky wont be so lucky this season and will be relegated with norwich. You need a better manager if you dont want that to happen and sooner than later.....I am the biggest fan of sparky the player but as manager then he dont belong in the premiership as he is not good enough.....
