Thought Brighton played some good stuff at times, largely bossed it. I said to my mate in the 2nd half, when Brighton had about 5 or 6 chances & half chances in a row, missing them all, that we'd nick it. And we did. If I was a Brighton fan, I'd be sick, they deserved something. But oh well.
Tends to be how it goes though - we were largely on the receiving end of it last season, although granted not so late on.
The ball didn't stick for us up front and Poyet realised this and pushed his team forward - luckily in their 15 min spell around the hour mark they failed to score and the home side nicked it - watched us so many times away over a lifetime do the same - if you don't score away from home you can always bank on the home side pinching one...
We didn't play that well but, we won and that is the main thing. I wonder if the referee would have given a penalty if Simpson didn't score ?
He would because I thought he already had so looked at him and he was still waving advantage whilst Simpson was celebrating!
He would. He signalled his arms for advantage to acknowledge the foul, and was till signalling it during the goal celebration.
Says it all about our new striker: Brighton ratings: Amos 7.5 Rosenior 7 Dudgeon 7.5 Faye 6.5 Chester 7 McKenna 7 Koren 7 Aluko 8 Stewart 7 Mclean 7 Proschwitz 5.5 #hcafc
I'm inpatient though, and he seemed slow and unable to win a header (like in pre season), and that's got nothing to do with him not settling in yet
Proschwitz was indeed the big negative today, we spent a lot of the game pumping balls up to him and he didn't get near one of them it was ridiculous. I don't think he had a shot either. The goal was the one move that we actually tried a positive forward through ball rather than smashing it into the box early (and it was a peach from Koren by the way). Brighton also got the ball forward quickly and they did it much better than us with Mackail-Smith or someone else getting on the end of it. That said I think they only really threatened once with Mackail-Smith's header, and our goal whilst something of a surprise deserved to win the game, it was a great move. Simpson deserves credit too, he's the only one of our strikers you feel will always be there for a tap in in the 6-yard box, that's why he scores so many tapins. I think the best thing about Brighton, and what troubled us most was their DM Bridcutt, he's an absolute tank, even McLean was easily brushed aside by him. I also thought Aluko was brilliant, you could see he's a cut above the other players on the pitch every time he got the ball. He's also really strong on the ball, he was the one player who Brighton couldn't get it off. They were very strong as a team but Aluko was always well-balanced and never got knocked off it. He's going to have a really good season. One final thought: Attwell really needs to find another profession. He's such a jessie when it comes to the big decisions it's unreal. He gave 3 bookings today, all incorrect and let countless late tackles go unpunished. It seems nobody has a clue what actually deserves a yellow card now and what doesn't.
Simpson coming back will help take the focus from Proschwitz hopefully though its a shame the plan of playing a big guy up front is looking a bit ropey at the moment.
My thoughts: http://boothferrytowembley.blogspot.com/2012/08/hull-city-1-brighton-0.html Good game, I thought. Would have been happy with a point, delighted with three!
