eh? he saved pompey from relegation and Southampton hired him when they were already virtually down, he brought in crouch and set the entire team up to play to crouch strengths, they went on a great run, crouch was scoring for fun and they missed out on surviving but it was virtually an impossible task.
I never said he was great, but Harry made the kind of mistakes that jnr's would. So we may as well have someone with potential, than someone who has never really achieved much success, or at least the kind we want.
Aye, but success in another league or the europa league doesn't mean anything to me if he can't take his success here, as some managers can take their "model", their style of management, beliefs from league to league and be a success. Other managers only excel in certain environments or certain countries so until I see avb work his "magic" and wow us with his great tactics, then to me, he is just another ramos.
What does that say about our previous managers if simpleton arry is our most successful manager in over 19 years? its easy to poke fun at arry and some of his ways but no other manager has got us into the champions league, and given us this level of consistency in the league. I mean I understand why you want a manager with potential but if that potential takes us backwards then thats not exactly something to be happy about!
We should have sent him on the uefa coaching course "learn tactics in 12 weeks"! or i'm sure there is a book on amazon
Fair comments Boss, but don't forget Ramos was the only manager to win us a trophy so far this century. So he weren't all bad. Harry did well for us, no doubt about it. But when you consider the players he had at his disposal, to end his time with us potless, doesn't reflect too well on him in that respect.
That was a great day, not sure what happened after that as it was all downhill from there, I think we ended the season with relegation form and took it into the following season. I know winning trophies are important but you also know it isn't an easy task, I mean we poke fun at Wenger but he is a great manager and how long since he won a trophy? david moyes is considered one of the best young managers but hasn't won a trophy. Getting us into the champions league is imo a harder task then winning an FA Cup or League Cup so it seems harsh on arry to attack him for not winning silverware,
For me you've made a key point about the players he had at his disposal. I believe last years squad, compared to the rest of the league, was the 3rd best squad and not far off 2nd. With 3 domestic trophies on offer i would expect to win a cup or get in the top 3. To finish 4th and win nothing was an underachievement. At this point in time our squad is not as strong. Modric is basically gone, we have no strikers. Also, the teams around us have improved more than us. Right now i would say our squad is 6th/7th best and that is where i expect to finish. We have quality in midfield and defence, enough to give anyone a run for their money, but the squad is so unbalanced without strikers.
Defoe scores goals, but he needs someone like Crouch playing alongside him in order to flourish. He doesn't hold the ball up well and doesn't really create chances for others. His pace allows him to get in behind teams, but if we're playing our usual system, then everyone defends really deep, nullifying that threat and stopping Bale and Lennon from doing the same. It also means that there are lots of bodies around the edge of the box, so he can't pull his usual scoring trick, where he creates a little space for himself and then hits one when the keeper's unsighted. An aerial threat or a provider up front, which Adebayor ticks both boxes on, stops teams from dropping so deep or they just concede in another way and then have to push up, leaving space. If a side like Sunderland could sign him and Andy Carroll, then I think they'd pair up very effectively and the media would question why they were allowed to leave their respective clubs. O'Neill would probably kill to bring them in as a pairing. Got to be better than spending £12m+ on Fletcher, hasn't it?
It was a genuine question. My Internets about as fast as a doped up tortoise. Faster to ask on here than attempt google.
If you look at all the clubs he has managed, he seems to get them achieving higher then any previous managers, its just at spurs his limitations on certain aspects became more apparent but overall I would say he gets team to punch above their weight.
Hmmm... Friedel Walker - Caulker - Vertoghen - Kaboul - Gallas -BAE Lennon - Livermore - Sandro - VdV - Parker - Siggy - Thudd - Bale Hmmm... I'm struggling to fit Bentley. We need a Bentley in there.
