I overheard this debate in the pub on Saturday night and it was interesting to listen in, given I used to get dragged up to RP in the 80's and remember Gatesy and Gabbers in their pomp.
The conclusion was Gates and Gabbers by a whisker.. But the guys were getting on so may have just had a soft spot for them.
    Personally... I'd agree with G&G..
    How would you compare them?

Loved marco (hence my tag) but p and q i think were one of the best partnerships ever and not just sunderlands! It's all about opinions but had some best match experiences with them two leading the line!!!

As much as i loved G and G, they never done it in the top flight, and when Marco did get promoted with us, he only scored 9 goals and we went straight back down again.

Quinn and Phillips got u7th in the top flight 2 seasons running, Phillips getting the European Golden Boot (I think its actually shoe but that just sounds bloody stupid).

Can only be 1 winning pairing for me Q and P by miles.

This, to the exact word <ok>

**** I loved Marco though, I actually cried when we sold him, as a wee lad, I swear he was better than Messi.

I remember Norwich away, first time I'd ever seen us in the top flight, we went 2 down, came back to 2-2, and Marco scored the most ridiculous goal, fell to him edge of box, outside of the boot, it bent and flew in, I vividly remember the entire ground, even the Norwich fans, giving the most ridiculous applause you've ever heard for a team conceding a goal.

If anyone can find a vid, please post it, I've looked in vain for it for years!

91-92 season if I remember right!

Hunting for this goal, I stumbled across this! Now, this might seem insignificant, but this was my first ever Sunderland game!!!

This has made my ****ing week, and it's only Monday!

    Wunderbar!

Aye same mate, I remember that, and the one he got v Chelsea, were both in Saint & Greavsie's goal of the season comp, but I can't find that anywhere, only the season after.

It must be somewhere, I remember he came second to Roy Wegerle, American kid played for QPR.

P AND Q. The record works for me, plus a hospital ward for the kids. The G force, might never have worked well in the prem. But P & Q prety much showed they had the ability, had we had a better team wrapped round them, who knows what the limits were. But like yourself, the soft spot for the G men still exists.

Been having this debate with my nephew for years, he's loved Marco from when he was a little boy, but for me.....it's Quinny and SKP...and as I sit here, at the other side of the world, looking at my signed Super Kev shirt on the wall of my sun room, I'm more certain than ever that these guys are the best we have ever had.

Surprised a few don't know who Marco and Gatesy are !

    Now I feel old !

Loved that pairing but honestly no way they could compete with NQ and SKP - as said elsewhere these two did it in the Premiership. Gatesy was too old by the time we bought him, and great though he was for us in tandem with Gabbiadini; when it came to the top flight it just didn't work.

    No comparison !
