No this isn't really about these two, but more about how we as fans react to departures and whether the nature of our Club is changing. When Rodgers left he was rounded upon by some with all the usual name-calling that goes on. This was before he reneged on the agreement on players that had even me changing my opinion of him. Not saying that was right or wrong but it happened. Now Allen is leaving to go to the same club, 'Our Joe' has received generally positive comments here. Again I'm not saying it should be any other way, but the reaction to these two departures has been markedly different, imo. So why is it we turn on some but not others? Is it as simple as saying one is a manager and the other not? Rodgers delivered Prem football to this club and we owed him a great deal. His subsequent behaviour aside, that to me is an unarguable fact, and I bet a straw poll of fans leaving Wembley last year would have revealed a substantial majority agreeing with that. Allen came through the ranks here but it was he who insisted on the £15M release clause and has now gone at the first opportunity. Not a world class player imo and one for which we've been outrageously overpaid. I'm not complaining. It's worthy of note that the limited evidence so far suggests his replacement is likely to be more effective and crucially, more attack-minded. Secondly, do Swans fans have to be less sentimental about being a 'family'? In this League are we going to be a 'conduit club', feeding the bigger teams with managers and players that we've brought in cheap and will sell on at a profit? Not perhaps what we've envisaged for our Club but in our position I think we may to get used to it. Are top managers and players likely to stay in Swansea for long? There is too much money in the top echelons of the game for 3/4 of this League to compete. Look at fans of other 'lesser teams' in the Prem. They don't tend to have the wave of hysteria we experience here when they lose talent. Are they just used to it and know it's inevitable? So, are we uneven in our reaction to departures? If so why? And is the nature of our Club changing because of the League we're in? If so, is it for the better or not?
I think it's about being to true to word. Don't piss on our leg and tell us it's raining. BR was forever full of himself and his blarney week in week out was becoming absurd. Even past the end point he was still trying it on ... And that was before the Allen Affair. RM to some extent did a similar thing. Although I wouldn't tar RM with the BR brush. Allen has given us nothing but good honest effort, a touch of class, and plenty of simple positive moments to remember him by. BR v Allen .... Worlds apart.
Really? There's an argument that Allen has given us the odd 'moment' but Rodgers gave us the biggest one of all. I agree that Rodgers deserves our vitriol for reneging on the agreement but it's a fact that he was instrumental in the biggest moment of our Club's recent history. Whichever way you look at it I can't understand why one should be treated differently to the other on departure. It's a good debating point if nothing else. I'd be interested to hear your views on whether the Swans will have to get used to this too.
Don't understand. What line of ****? If you mean the usual blarney well that's par for the course with him. Don't think that stuff matters really. But if a manager says he's only here to build a career and didn't really care about the club or the fans he'd be rounded on. Rodgers was always honest when he came here and said that he wasn't going to be here forever. It was obvious to all that he would move on at some stage even though it was earlier than most of us thought. I was at Morgan's following our Wembley win and it was Rodgers everyone wanted to meet and have their photo taken with. Allen was just one of many players who had done well that season. Still doesn't answer the question why both departures have been regarded differently by the fans. I think it's quite curious.
good luck to both, i think BR will fail to meet the expectations of the Liverpool fans due to his lack of a plan b or c (and no plan b video this time)
Rodgers: * One week before he leaves he tells the fans and media that he wouldn't go to Liverpool because it wouldn't be fair on the fans. We all know how that turned out. * He tells the media that swansea have first call siggy but if he doesn't sign for Swansea then he would want him. He must really think we're stupid. * He then tells the media that if any of the Swansea players came on the market, he would like to be in that market. To me this is a blatent attempt to unsettle our squad and is urging them to hand in a transfer request. * Finally he signs Joe Allen therefore going back on his word that he wouldn't sign any of our players for a year. A man with no honour or integrity. Joe Allen: * Tells the media he just wants to concentrate on the Olympics and will discuss it with the club when he returns. * Comes back, accepts triple wages at Liverpool thus setting him, his family and his unborn baby up for life, thanks the club and fans for everything and leaves kindly. No bullshit, no drama, just plain and simple. It's not to difficult to see why one is now hated yet the other leaves with all our best wishes. Joe Allen - a true professional.
I think the difference is the disingenuous way Rodgers has treated our club over Joe. When he left he went with my blessings and thanks though thought it was to early for him to take Liverpool manager. But then he started this media campaign to sign joe despite the agreement in place. It turned his head obviously as the club is a big one. He basically **** on our club, the guy has zero integrity and Liverpool are club with no ethics and foreign owners who think they can do anything ! As for joe he's a young player he's going to look at his options if he's in demand. He has kept himself to himself and hasn't said anything to the media, he like huw has shown great respect to our club. And I wish him all the best, he will move onto bigger and better things than our mid table rivals.
Musty we'd be happy to see a clear plan A after the last two seasons Good post. It's far from a fair competition and never really will be. Hyperbole.
No the truth, your problem is you come here and do not accept that there is another side to the transfer. Now you and the Liverpool supporters have got what you want, now sod off to gloat on your own board on how your once great club managed to get one over the little club. Hope you're happy!
At the end of the day we just have to accept that Joe has moved on to a bigger club. He wants to achieve things and win trophys and let's face it he wasn't going to win any with us. Think Liverpool got a great deal at only £15 million as in a couple seasons he will be worth double that. I say good luck to him and I can see him helping them achieve champions league qualification for next season.
Agreed, musty. Missed the point lads. Most of you are going on about Rodgers reneging on the agreement. I agree with you but he was heavily criticised as a 'judas' before that, yet Joe leaves with our blessing. Why? Nobody has answered yet.
