I'd say when he stops conceding so many free-kicks and getting yellow cards, which I'm sure he will, YES...!

Think Parker is in marginally better form this year, but not as skilled, and Essien is better but in worse form. They all play very similar roles for their teams, except when Mikel is playing for Chelsea.

And a holding midfielder is the same as a defensive midfielder. The only variation of a player in that role is a deep lying playmaker, who does not break up play.

Example; Mascherano is a holding/defensive mid. Alonso is more a deep lying playmaker, (usually deployed alongside a DM because they are not as good defensively).

Surely that would arouse a gay person.

Tash your **** about defensive/holding midfield is bullshit and pedantic in the extreme. They both occupy the same position in a conventional 4-4-2 so for the purposes of this discussion it makes no difference at all which one Tiote is. It's like spoiling a debate about who the best left midfielder in the Premier League is by saying "It can't be Gareth Bale because he's a winger".

You wouldn't have a defensive midfielder and a holding midfielder in the same team (unless you're an Italian manager and your sole intention is to bore the watching audience into a coma) so comparisons between the two are perfectly valid. So well done on pointlessly ruining a decent conversation with your Football Manager snobbery. <ok>

Totally agree with AG. It's like saying who's the best LB in the PL? ''It can't be Cole he's a wing-back''. <ok>

Tiote's equally good enough playing a standard 4 man midfield and being a box-to-box CM(obviosuly his best atrributes are defensively).

I know what your getting at but my impression of a wing-back is different to a left back. E.g. Enrique could play left back in a 4-4-2 but if he played on the left in a 3-5-2, he would be a wing back.

But I agree with your original point. It is like calling a Striker a Centre Forward, its the same thing.

There's just different ''types''/variations'' to all the different positions in modern football.

    Full-back - Wing-back.
    CB - Sweeper.
CM - Box-to-box, Defensive Mid, ''Deep-lying playmaker'', Attacking Mid, etc.
    ML/MR - Wingers, Left/Right-sided midfielders, etc.
Same with Strikers who can be ''target men'', ''poacher'', ''speed-machine'', etc.

Exactly, there's positional variations from country to country, generation to generation, formation to formation in terms of the intricate differences ie. wing-back/fullback. But for arguments sake, let us call a spade a spade and say DM is the same as a holding midfielder (which they are), Tiote has been a cracking little gem uncovered this season.

That said, he does tend to pick up too many yellows and get caught in possession at times, but it's been his first season in the prem and has had to adjust. He's def one of the best DMs in the prem IMO along with Toure and Essien (though not on this season's showing) but can only get better.

Wilshere is a box to box player who is better defensively than attacking.

I wouldn't worry too much about him calling Wilshere a defensive midfielder, he thinks Gareth Barry is one of the 3/4 key players for England

Yaya toure has never once played defensive midfield for city.He played there for Barcelona but he's always played in the hole behind the forward.Only Barry and De Jong have played there for us even though we are supposed to play at least 8 there every game
I think Song for arsenal would be in the top 5 with de Jong tiote essien and Howard Webb for the ragmongs

Toure has been playing further forward for City, he was pretty much a second striker on Saturday.
