You're such a wind-up merchant, Tony. Barmby certainly didn't contribute as much as Elliott, Ashbee, etc, but he's still to be respected for his decision to drop down to League One when he did. Also, he did make a fair contribution, even if it wasn't as great as some of his contemporaries.
TWF has always denied this but he is one of our PL fans... popped out of nowhere on this other forum, he's only a student too so I don't think he's been following us for too long... but that statement of his does back things up.
i accept in the Barmby isn't a football legend of world football , but in the context of Hull City - he is the nearest thing we probably have to that accolade. my all time favorite player is mr Whittle but he clearly isn't THE greatest player ive seen - again this is all in the context of his peers. Im sure there are players at Hartlepool , Scunthorpe , Bury and Barnsley that their own fans consider legends - its not to say people are comparing talent and achievement with the likes of Maradonna and Best. roll on the football
Along with the likes of Ash, Elliott, Deano, Daws, Bo and Whittle, Barmby is one of the club legends of the recent era. All made their own contributon to our success of recent years, some more than others, but are all held in high regard for their achievements and hard work with the club and rightly so. Injury and sub appearances may have blighted Nick's game time here at times but i'm sure we all remember his crucial equaliser at Stoke in 2007, the goal against Watford in the play offs and his goals at Hillsborough. Even in the latter part of his time here, his ability as an impact sub and willingness to fight for the cause was a quality which was much admired. Indeed, that was something we missed at times last seaosn. Being a local lad is part of the reason, but to say it's the only reason he is regarded as a legend is insulting to what he has achieved here.
It was Tony who started the thread and wrote about the legend part I don't see any other threads on here saying Nick Barmby and legend, can you?
Yep, the man who saved us from relegation from the Championship, then became the first ever to get us promotion to the Premier League, and then the first to keep us there is no way a legend of the club. IMO Brown is more deserving of legend status for us than Barmby is. I've been going since 98 so have been lucky to see some proper legends of the club, and I'd say without a doubt Phil Brown is a legend. Barmby is considered the way he is because of what he's done in the game prior to joining us, for taking a huge pay cut to join us, playing his part in 2 promotions,, his effort and desire on the pitch, giving up his playing career to become our manager and plenty of other reasons.
Phil Brown would have been a legend if he left the club when he should have. He got us up and took us down in flames. I was ashamed that he was our manager by the end of his tenure, he turned us into a laughing stock. The same ego that boosted the players and took us to the PL got too big to handle and got in the way. His friendship with Paul Duffen alone, the guy who almost destroyed our club, is enough for me to make sure he will never be a club legend.
This debate has been done a million times so I don't really want to reignite it. IMO even with what happened in the last year or so at City Browny should always be considered a club legend.
I quite agree but nobody goes on about it really do they, at least the footy starts soon so we will have something a bit less daft to talk about!
If you fast forward 20 years or so the only times people will be remembering Brown for the last year of his time here will be times when we're in the **** again. If things are good people will only bring up the promotion/survival seasons. The only reason it divides opinion on him so much now is because it's so recent that it's still affecting the club.
