Anton Ferdinand has admitted he would dearly love to be named QPR’s club captain.

The defender - brother of Rio and cousin of Loftus Road legend Les Ferdinand – is one of several players to have worn the armband during pre-season.

With Joey Barton having been stripped of the captaincy, manager Mark Hughes will announce his skipper after the squad return from a trip to Germany.

The likes of summer signing Ji-sung Park are also being considered for the role.

“It’s an honour to captain this club,” said Ferdinand, who was captain for last week’s friendly at Wycombe.

“My family runs deep in this club – with Les, and Rio played here as a kid, and now I’m playing here – and to captain a club like QPR was fantastic.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want it, but it’s not my decision. Whoever is made club captain will do a great job and will have all the lads’ backing.

“We’ll push and work hard whoever the captain is. It’s not about one person who wears the armband, it’s about the 11 on the pitch.

“The gaffer’s brought in people who are leaders, and having as many leaders as we’ve got in our team can only be good for QPR.”

I really hope whoever is captain it is not Anton. When he can't lead a CB pairing I fail to see how he can lead the team. Clint for me, if he's going to be a regular player.

The fallout (deserved or not) from the JT affair is going to determine this. It may be that he's given the armband as a show of support and solidarity. That would be the only reason he would get it.

I would think it more likely that the conduct on the pitch that the court case exposed will probably prevent him from being seriously considered.

IMO was one of our most consistant players last season and due to the family connection and the fact he probably hates John Terry at least as much as I do, if not more, he gets my vote!

I agree, don't think he is a leader.

He will probably retire at the end of the season so theres no point doing a short term captain. Maybe Park has a shot, while he may not be a loudmouth, he certainly leads by example.

That's what they said about Churchill.

And they were right. No way can a badly animated nodding dog lead a premiership football team effectively.

It would mean he would have to shake hands with John Terry on 15th September..........

Always thought he was a bit immature to be captain and lacked leadership skills. But sometimes that kind of responsibility can change people. Maybe he's never shown that side of himself because no one took a chance and had belief in him! Whatever we think of Rio, he's been a great captain over the years, and maybe it's in the blood...

The Terry trial thing and the punch up in a nightclub should put an end to any thoughts of him being captain.
