Van der Wiel

Following the reported failure of our bid to sign Debuchy, newcastle are now being linked with Gregory Van der Wiel of Ajax.

In 2002 Van der Wiel was kicked out of the academy at Ajax due to his "attitude problems", however, by 2005 Ajax had re-signed him.

Did this signal an improvement in his attitude and reputation?

Van der Wiel was very much a central defender originally , but this changed in 2008 when Marco Van basten recognised his attacking abilities
and converted him to full-back.

Van der Wiel is said to have wonderful pace, which is helpful with both attacking and defensive options.

Over the years he has been linked to many major clubs all over Europe, therefore indicating he has talent.

what do you guys think about the possibility of him playing for the Toon. A gamble worth the risk ? or not

personally l hope we rescue the Debuchy deal and hang on to Simpson, but Van der Wiel could be another little gem pulled out of the bag.

 

Ben Arfa also has/had attitude problems, there's a limit to the number of potentially volatile players we want in the squad. And we definitely don't want to go back to the days of signing players with colossal egoes.

 

I think we need players to fill the left full-back position rather than another option on the right.

 

One more time: On Sunday the match for the Johan Cruijff Schaal is played, similar to that of the Community Shield. Van der Wiel, Anita, Alderweireld, Boilesen and Toivonen will be playing in that game, all linked with NUFC in the last couple of months. I will make a match thread about it and share some links so you guys can watch for yourselves.

 

He's a fantastic player, but I'll leave it up to Pards to decide if he's worth the ****

 

WAS... for a season. There's a reason he's being offered to clubs all of a sudden, rather than the likes of Chelsea supposedly willing to shell out for him.

He hasn't been his best recently, but there's no denying he has talent, and that flame can be re-sparked.

But for me, I think we need to see another good season from him. It's fair enough to say he's got talent because he's shown it before, it's just whether or not he's a one season wonder.

Personally i'd rather go for Pieters or Sakho, if hes still available, over Van der Wiel

 

Come watch the game on sunday, and then decide if you still want him. I already wrote two reports on the guy and they weren't positive. That's just an indication, you can see it with your own eyes during the game.
