The first Mrs H was a dancer and was in various shows, after one of which we met the Shadows at a stage party. Pleasant lads, as far as I can remember...
Andy - I think you might find it more likely to be Friends Reunited rather than Genes Reunited - you have just sent Roo into shock
I hate to jump in on such an established thread, but music is a massive part of my life. Ive been playing guitar for 2 1/2 years now and piano/keyboard for 1 year - my only regret is not taking either up sooner. Here are a list of my influences in no particular order: Muse, A-ha, The Killers, Gorillaz, Van Halen, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, Supertramp, Coldplay, Dream Theater, Coheed & Cambria, Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Joe Satriani, Journey, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, White Stripes, Nightmare of You, MGMT, Frederic Chopin, JS Bach I think theres something for everyone there, i try to keep an open mind when it comes to music. Anyone else play an intrument on here? Sorry if youve already said so, ive only skimmed through the thread so far...
I like an awful lot of music - but I HATE Jazz - and don't even get me started on the likes of the Dudley Moore trio
I'm not going to list my favourites - it would take too long. The best live performances I've seen are: The Bhundu Boys at a club in Hoxton. The whole building was moving. Leonard Cohen at the Albert Hall. It really felt like you were in his living room Dr Feelgood at the Watford Town Hall and pubs in London. The best pub band ever in my opinion. I am also particularly proud of my time on the entertainment committee when I was a student. We once had a double billl of The Clash and The Damned. For one Christmas doo we decided to book a support act for the headline band Alberto y Los Trios Paranoios. We didn't normally book support acts but this time we paid 150 quid for The Police. The most disappointing live shows I've seen are The Who and Lou Reed. I also like modern minimalist classical music- people like Steve Reich, Arvo Part, john Adams
Some good music in this thread ,as its friday night and we need some music in the nest, thought I would bring it back!
Is RAP music? What do folks consider to be a minimum requirement of any form of music? Melody, harmony, rhythm, structure? Does RAP have any of these? Discuss.......
It's a matter of taste, vic, but some rap is excellent. Beat and rhythm, definitely there in rap. Ever heard Eminem and Sir Elton John's 'Stan' - it's great.
For me, music is all about how the sound makes you feel. Whether it is rap, dance, trance, electro, classical, jazz, rock or whatever. As long as I like the way it feels. I have always been a fan of more intricate music, particularly more modern music that is classically inspired. Lots of intertwined layers. I find that I can like a song due to one tiny part of the score. I think all of this comes down to the fact I grew up around musical instruments and invariably classical orchestral music. What I love about orchestral music is any section of the orchestra on its own can sound empty and boring. But combined with all the other sections and it produces an amazing sound that has the ability to affect emotions. That is what makes music special for me. For those interested, I have Grade 8 violin, Grade 5 clarinet and Grade 3 piano!
BBW - I am with you completely on this, I like any type of music as long as it makes me feel something - happy, sad, need to jump about or whatever, as long as it makes you feel something.
And here's me with a Grade 1 CD player! Hate those new-fangled ipod thingys - they may as well be pea pods, too small and fiddly for me. I tried playing the violin once but couldn't figure out how to use the stick properly
BBW sounds like you would be fantastic at a party I agree with W-Y as long as music affects an emotion and makes you feel something ,then it has succeeded! If it leaves you like youve just wasted minutes of your life..........
I am going to be potentially offensive and make a statement based on assumption alone! It is a generation thing! As for the violin, I was lucky to have started playing when I was 6! I was also very lucky to have potentially the best teacher as well. Anyone know of Julia Watson?!
Indirectly correct BBW. My inability to play musical instruments dates back to when teachers could belt kids with impunity. I was belted severely for being unable to read music (and hadn't even been taught!) - to the extent that I still shake when I pick up one of my son's guitars. But I do love listening to music though - heathen that I may be, I can still even drift off to some church organ music. I find music to be a useful tool in the classroom - can calm kids down, speed up their work rate, help them focus, generally help them learn. Quite often, if they forget a concept I have been teaching from a previous lesson, I prompt their memory simply by reminding them of the music that was playing during that lesson. Amazing really.
