I think he's much improved lately and I'd have him at Sunderland if (a) there wasn't the mag/mackem thing and (b) we didn't have to bugger our wage structure to get him here. Difficult to fit him in with Ba and Cisse at NUFC, I'd have thought, but otherwise a decent buy (not at £35M though).

Andy Carroll – Liverpool withdraw him for Europa League squad

In fact he was initially in the squad and then the England striker was withdrawn from the squad, so perhaps that means that something is percolating in his desired move to Newcastle.
Newcastle would not want him cup-tied, but even if he played in the qualifiers he would still be able to play for Newcastle in the group stages of the tournament, assuming Newcastle make it to the group stages, and we have a two legged qualifying tie later this month.
The 6’3″ striker had originally been named in the squad for the game against FC Gomel, in the third qualifying round tie, but it seems strange that he was withdrawn, and why would that be the case?
The Liverpool squad flew out of John Lennon airport earlier today without their striker, so it’s hardly surprising that there is now increased speculation about why Liverpool did that.
Some reports suggest that Andy Carroll has picked up a groin injury, but that could also be a smoke-screen for the real reason why he was withdrawn – the plot thickens.

Andy Carroll seems adamant that he will only move to Newcastle, and he has already let West Ham know he’s not interested in a move to Upton Park, even though West Ham offered silly money to Liverpool for him.
The ball is in Newcastle’s court to increase their bid for the Gateshead striker - but the ball is in Newcastle’s court on about five potential moves, to increase their bid.
Andy should not feel alone in that respect.

Could this be the best piece of business/biggest fluke of MA's life?

Sell Mandy for £35 million buy him back for £15-20M eighteen months later (a profit of 15-20 million, for what he would surely see, as effectively a loan fee).

Mandy comes back with a point to prove, having got as far in his career as he would have with us sitting on the bench at Liverpool. IF he kicks off where he left off people will quickly forget about the 18 month train wreck that was his LFC career!

I would love him back. I don't think he's worth 18 mil, but I suppose getting him back for half of what you sold him within 18 months or so is good business.

Good business in anyone's eye's. He's still got goals in him and would feel happier being back home.

I don't want him back to be honest, am not being bitter about him leaving us i just believe that for the money that is talked about we could get a much better striker, or even 2 players which our small squad needs. I mean take Andy Carrolls heading ability out the equation he is a very average player, his all round game needs a lot of work

Would feel like the club had been robbed, giving anything in the region of £15-20million BACK to Liverpool.

Who is this "much better" striker we could get for the same money though? I want to know who people have in mind for around 15m who we could get thats much better? Also who's much better that would could sign within the wage cap?

I hear people saying this all the time, but I want an example.

The strikers we've been linked to and gone after so far have been better than Carroll in certain ways, but none of them have been MUCH better, and none of them do what Carroll is good at doing, nearly as well.

We don't necessarily need "better". We have Ba and Cisse, who in my opinion are already better. We need better value and I think there are better value options out there. If there is one area of the squad we do not need to splash out £15m on, it is up front.

I may go a bit farther. Loic Remy is better, somewhat. deJong, however, is a player who has torn up a league of roughly equal level of quality to the Championship and who has never played on any even halfway large stage. You would hope that he would make the step up, but it's a big step. Carroll, in my view, would have to rank above de Jong.

Would rather Kuqi. At least he doesn't break teammates jaws.

If we're planning to make a good go of the Europa league, plus maintain a good, strong premier league position, we need more than 2 quality strikers, especially seeing as both of them will likely be called up to the ACoN and hoping that Senegal will do **** would be stupid. They have a lot of quality, they were just coached poorly in defense last time, they still carry a very dangerous threat and can get further next time.

We need a 3rd striker, and people say Carroll isn't as good as Ba and Cisse, technically I'd agree, but neither possess the same physical threat and aerial threat as him, and we can't play our passing footy every game and expect it to work.

Our passing game doesn't work if a team decides to sit back, defend and hope to grind out a result, something which I think a lot of teams will do against us seeing as we're becoming a respected, quality team.

We arse raped a lot of teams with a big threat + long balls over the last couple of years. We can still play good footy, at the same time as playing long balls, Spurs did it.

Carroll being, in most peoples opinion, our 3rd best striker, wouldn't make him a bench warmer, because the sheer amount of games we'd play, he'd be starting 20+ games.

I'd be happy getting Remy or Guidetti, but Carroll would be a good signing. He's not worth the amount we'd pay, but getting him back for half the price we sold him for is good business.

Our passing game will be very difficult to play in certain games, when we are without Cabaye, Ben Arfa ect due to having to rest them.
