Sunderland bid £12m for Wolves striker Fletcher in effort to boost firepower Sunderland have made a £12million bid for long-time target Steven Fletcher, 25, who Wolves value at £15m. Sportsmail understands the Black Cats have made a formal offer for the 25-year-old Scotland international after months of speculation over his future. Fletcher, who has two years remaining on his contract at Molineux, is understood to be among manager Martin O'Neill's main targets this summer as he attempts to plug the gaps left by Asamoah Gyan and Nicklas Bendtner. Former Hibernian frontman Fletcher joined the Black Country club from Burnley two summers ago, and although he personally has performed creditably in the Barclays Premier League, has been relegated twice during his time in the English top flight. O'Neill has, to date, made only one signing since the end of last season after completing a move for free agent Carlos Cuellar following the expiry of his deal at Aston Villa. At the same time, a procession of players have headed out of the Stadium of Light, many of them from the fringes of the senior squad, but including the likes of Gyan, Scotland keeper Craig Gordon and central defender Michael Turner. The Ulsterman revealed last week that the club was monitoring several situations and that he hoped to make a breakthrough soon. Meanwhile, Wolves are keen on a loan deal for Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, 20. Apparently our first bid came two weeks ago and was rejected. If it was 12m id expect it to be a similar deal to Gyan and Wickham. 12m will be the max fee subject to goals/appearances etc but the actual initial fee will be more like 8m
If its 12 million id be disappointed. Hes an average premiership striker. Probably score 10 next season. For another 5 mil we could have probably got a much better striker like doumbia. I mean the mags spent no more than 10 last season on ba and cisse. They combined about 30 goals last season. Yeah they got lucky to an extent but for ****s sake we spent 15 and got bent. Yeah hes a judas tosser now but he was much better than fletcher and only cost an extra 3 million. Once again as we have done for seasons now we have spent way over the top on average players.
Que? OP, £12million for Fletcher, wow, surely a foriegn player, properly scouted, for that amount of money, can do better than the approximate 1:3 that Fletcher is likely to get (guessing by his previous record)
It seems to me firstly how can wolves want that much when they are in the championship!, all MON has to do is wait and he will be keen to come here. Newcastle will sell Ba to raise the money to buy Andy carroll, so we should go for Ba for say £8m and that makes more sense. And Bent is a class striker. We should go for Berbatov though as he is class and do not know why Alex fergusson would want to sell him.
So you want Ba, Bent and Berbatov? Something about B's? That would be a formidable strike force like.
Daily mail says 12m?? Hmmm!! I never believe any of the ****e that arse wiping rag prints. Ssn said we'd bid for him which I believe but can't see any numbers anywhere
just an honest question for everyone on here, has the daily mail ever been right with any football transfer story?
£12m (if thats even close to being true) seems steep, I find it hard to believe that MoN would be spending more than £7-8m on Fletcher. Perhaps he and his scouts see more from the player, its fair to assume they know alot more than us about it! You certainly need a couple of goalscorers so this may just be the first.
Sky they say there best players are not for sale dos'nt mean they are not going to sell them just because there are not for sale
Wolves have no intention of parting with their best players and are refusing to comment on reports claiming Sunderland have bid for Steven Fletcher. With the club having slipped out of the Premier League, speculation regarding the future of their most saleable assets was inevitable. The likes of Fletcher have shown that they are capable of mixing it with English football's elite and will feel that they deserve to be turning out at the highest possible level. Wolves are not planning on sticking around in the Championship for long, though, with it their intention to secure promotion at the first time of asking. Keeping their top talents will aid them in that quest and the Molineux board will do all they can to keep the vultures at bay. Offers Chief executive Jez Moxey has made it clear that the club have no need to sell and has sought to brush aside reports suggesting that Sunderland are doing their utmost to lure Fletcher to Wearside. He told the Express and Star: "We are not getting drawn on offers for players in or out. "Our best players are not for sale, we want to keep them and build the strongest possible team for the season ahead. "We will do everything we can to retain the players we want to keep and continue to look to strengthen with new signings."
Don't know if it's a more reliable source than any other, but according to BBC we've bid £10m for him Sunderland have made a £10m bid for Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. The offer is understood to be under consideration, with Wolves waiting to see whether Aston Villa decide to firm up their interest in the 25-year-old. Fletcher's former club Burnley will be due 15% of any profit Wolves make on a player they paid £7m for in 2010. Sunderland are short of attacking options following the departures of Asamoah Gyan and Nicolas Bendtner. Fulham and Stoke are also interested. "We are not getting drawn on offers for players in or out," Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey told the Wolverhampton Express and Star. "Our best players are not for sale; we want to keep them and build the strongest possible team for the season ahead. We will do everything we can to retain the players we want to keep and continue to look to strengthen with new signings." Sunderland suffered defeat by Hartlepool on Friday, with none of manager Martin O'Neill's three strikers - Fraizer Campbell, Connor Wickham and Ryan Noble - able to find the net. Fletcher by the numbers â¢7 - Steven Fletcher scored the most headed goals in the 2011-12 Premier League â¢12 - Premier League goals Fletcher scored for Wolves last season. Fletcher has two years remaining on his contract at Molineux, leaving chief executive Jez Moxey in a strong position to negotiate the best possible deal. No Sunderland striker reached double figures in the goal tally last season, with Bendtner and Stephane Sessegnon the top-scorers with eight. "We know where the problem is. You just need to look at our scoring record last season," O'Neill said last week. "This puts pressure on other players to score, either from set-pieces or midfield. "Eventually centre-forwards have to weigh in and, at the moment, you would want to know who and when someone is going to score 15 goals in a Premier League season."
