We know it is not just about money - we proved that last year which ever way you look at it. Just for fun, I have added the monetary values of four teams, basing the figures from the Premier League fantasy football site which I am assuming is reasonably realistic. If that is not the case (and I'm sure you will tell me if not!) then the rest of the post is rubbish. Norwich - the team we love to hate for whatever reason - adds up to £122m Fulham - the team we are desperate to beat next season - £132.5m West Brom - a team we were aspiring to emulate last season - £139m QPR - the finest football team in the history of the world - £141m but excluding Hoilett as not yet updated to lets say £5 for him to take us up to £145m. The point of the post is not to laugh at Norwich's relatively lean squad but to point out that with all the spending this summer, we are, in monetary terms, a very average premier league side. Any talk of a high finish is not justified by the resources that we have. We have certainly gone in the right direction but there is a long way to go, and many 10s of millions to spend, before we can aim at top 8 or better unless we have a season where we consistently punch above our weight. Not at all impossible. Perhaps this is some supportive evidence for those who believe that we will finish a few places above the drop zone with a few points to spare next season. However, there is no room for complacency or over confidence.
Now that I am stopped pretending I am a maths teacher. I would take the valuations on Fantasy Premier League with a pinch of salt they were probably made up by some 15 year old work experience kid from the local school but you make a good point that we shouldnt be expecting a top 8 finish and get to over confident. The club is definitely moving in the right direction and we have made some great signings but we need build on last year and for me I think 12th would represent a great step forward in establishing ourselves as a Premier League club.
None taken at all. I'm not so sure about the valuations eg Park came in at £6m for us and Dempsey at £9.5m for Fulham. The whole process is fraught with error, however, especially since there are players listed that will never play for that team eg Buz for us. It was just to give a general feel and make the point about not having unrealistic expectations.
There was a site that listed actual transfer value estimates of the teams (not what actually paid so SWP wouldnt be £6m) and that would be a lot better to look at rather than a site that just looks at stats. eg a player like faurlin wont be worth much but is worth a lot more in reality.
Thanks Flyer. I did try and look for more reliable data but failed. Any ideas where that site might be anyone?
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/queens-park-rangers/startseite/verein_1039.html?from=news_text Total value 79.500.000 They have Hoilett rated at £9m which makes it a good deal for us. The only thing I disagree with is that old players are worth 450k minimum, the likes of Cerny, HH, Derry would only be taken on a free. We are listed 12th in total value, behind Fulham but that would change when they sell Dempsey.
I see we are a bit behind the £440 000 that City are worth! All the more remarkable that we had them on the run for a bit. Just shows how any team can have a good day and defy the odds.
