Believed to be 1.5m upfront with variables which could reach 3m. (I would guess they're appearance based)

The talk of 8m was from last summers transfer window and as far as I'm aware that was our asking price. Norwich offered the most at that time with 5m. Remember he had two years on his contract back then so he was more of a valuable asset. The potential 3m seems fair for a player in the last year of his contract and for a player of his calibre.

a player of his calibre is worth more in my opinion, at the end of the day bates wants to earn as much money as poss before he sells up

Disagree. A player who is in the last year of his contract and with no top league experience should not be worth any more than he sold for. Don't get me wrong I think he'll be a success at Norwich, but I feel we got about as much as possible for him. Shame we didn't get the full amount up front, but oh well.

Although your last statement may well be true!

Oh and welcome to not606 <ok>

I think it boils down to him wanting prem football and he couldn't see Leeds getting him there, sorry but it's that simple !

He was sold to balance the Leeds team.

Now they are all mediocre! <magic>

He chose to go. His international manager told him he needed to play in the Premiership to get in the Scotland team so he left us. No need to fish for conspiracy theories

Yeah, but now our opponents will have to mark 5 guys instead of 1!

So wouldn't Bates have wanted more or accepted the 8m bid he received last season?

There wasn't an 8mil bid this or last season. Your pulling that out of your arse. Bates said he wouldn't sell last season for less than 8m, and that wasn't his value at the time it was more just saying he isn't for sale but we'll accept silly bids. I think we may have been able to get 3.5m for him but not much more. I'm sad to see him go but HE wanted prem football, as a great Elmo once said there is no need to be fish for conspiracy theories
