just how good is marshall? And where do we play him? i think maybe 4-2-3-1 behind the striker- but then we have a lot of strikers and need a RW...
Marshall has a very good end product which is rare for a player in this league. He can do a job anywhere across the middle but I think he will be better sitting in the pocket behind the strikers
Bloody hell was De Laet quick. Give Dyer a run for his money. Nuge looked really sharp, and Vardy reminds me of a Dickov with a better touch. Vardy also won more balls in the air than Futacs - shows what a full pre season can do. It was a good run out and some of the lads look really sharp. NP is gonna have to make some tough decisions cos all of the central midfielders looked good. Mind you this was only Hinckey. Left with 10 mins to go and it was still 4-1
I think, with the amount of strikers we're carrying, it's unlikely we'll play with just one up front. The diamond might work well with this squad maybe?
never a diamond!! Always hated it- no with and if its played with width then nothing in the middle. Early days but after today the line up it sounds like it deserves: Pernis Peltier Morgan Moore Kennedy Drinkwater James Gallagher Marshall Dyer Nugent. obviously not going to be that, but by the sound of it could be that. We do have a lot of strikers...
I don't think the diamonds that bad - provided you play it well. It gives you the two strikers up front and the flexibility in midfield. Yes width is a problem but De Laet sounds quite an attacking full back and Konchesky has good delivery. I don't believe we should be frightened by what happened with it last season. The problem then wasn't the system itself but how we played it. Sven played three holding players in the diamond and we were devoid of any creativity. That shouldn't be a problem now. Against the better teams who played more open football it worked well because we outplayed them in midfield. Only against the lower teams did it fail since they had 10 behind the ball and we didn't have the creativity to break them down.
just got back..marshall is a class act, ran the second half, vardy is quick and gets in good positions (missed a couple) , but he will score goals ....nugent is class....de laet is very quick...deffo right full back...james was steady, schlupp started off ok, would be nice to see him be a bit less greedy, gally looked fit and keen, still one of our most gifted players...futacs is better than howard on the deck, but howard is better in the air...peltier was going through the motions IMO...most of the rest ..6/10............ I know its early days, just my opinions... Official attendance...3461...ish... the guy on the PA was a clown..so were the security..telling people off for taking photo's ...pathetic...
Its not just last season- i really do hate the diamond. Just a personal preference sorta thing though.
Tbh, as idealistic as it may sound, I'm not a big fan of formations and systems. I believe the best attacking sides don't really have formations. Fair enough, when you defend you need a solid shape br when you attack, then players should play more with instinct and drift into space, pass and move, interchange and rotate positions because that's a lot harder to defend against than a team with a fixed, rigid structure. Especially as players like Marhsall, Drinky etc. suit that way
Was impressed with Moores at the back in the 2nd, very composed, even when up against Hinckley's "Kanu". From the game (albeit the 1st pre-season friendly) I would take the 2nd half XI and swap de Laet for Peltier and possibly James for Drinkwater, and a toss up between Schlupp and Dyer. Just my thoughts, now is the time for them to be shot to pieces!! Oops, forgot the big Dane in goal!!
Wonder if Schlupp could be one of the wide positions in a 4-3-3? I'd like a front 3 of Marshall-Nugent-Schlupp, full of pace and trickery. I really hope he stays and plays, been ages since we've had such a prospect!
You can't read a lot into last night's performance but it is a good confidence booster and also demonstrates that we will have more 'options' tactically and formation wise in this coming season - as someone else posted above, I too don't get too hung up on 'formations' as really good players can play almost anywhere and it has more to do with ability, movement and commitment than just down to formation ... but I think we can all agree that the current squad wets the appetite ... and with the prospect of further additions it is all boiling up nicely ...
oh god i hope not, the only person that has successfully gone from striker to winger is Gally, all the rest have flopped, anyone remember Vassell out there?
I just seen Ben Marshall's goal from last night. Decent to say the least. Great bit of skill to set Nugents goal up
Congratulations, get the open top bus out and the bunting up! You won in a pre-season friendly, hardly a game of any significance but if that's what floats your boat.
