So my best friend of 15 years or so is a Liverpool fan who today claimed that Liverpool are in a better position than Newcastle, and "have far more going for them at the moment". I was bewildered, but for the sake of friendship laughed it off at the time, claiming that "of course you'd say that, you're a Liverpool fan and vice versa."
Unfortunately I knew he was serious, and simply couldn't get my head around it! This is a team coming off the back of a disastrous season, and facing the possibility of a slow and shaky rebuilding under a new manager. On top of this, they have an aging squad, more overpriced failures than you could shake a stick at and very few promising young players coming through.
On the other hand, we are coming off the back of an incredible season, we have a young, exciting squad with plenty of talent coming through the ranks and pushing for places, we are financially sound and have a sucessful and stable operation in place.

Yet he was completely serious... baffling!

I know which team I'd rather be supporting.

Would anyone change the club they are currently supporting though AB! For all the success Barca have had recently, and what with them being possibly the best team in history, would I rather be a Barca fan? Nope.

For the record I do not think its an extremely contentious statement! Yes, we were miles behind Newcastle in the league, but we both qualified for the same European competition and we won a trophy last season, something Newcastle couldn't do and haven't been able to in about 40/50 years?

I personally think it just shows the difference in expectation between the two clubs. That a succesful season for Newcastle is a respectable finish in the league and qualifying for any European competition. While Liverpool are derided and called disastrous for winning a cup and qualifying for Europe.

A true fan will always follow his own team, there are those that tend to follow winning teams (glory hunters) but that's something we can't be accused of.

All fans see it differently I guess. Rose tinted specs and all that.

He's probably had conversations with fellow Dippers about how Rodgers will knock them into shape and get them playing flowing football once again. How they still have some 'big' players (Gerard, Suarez, etc). And how 'big' their club is.

And I'm sure they do have some decent youngsters coming through - a couple of the lads who played against our youngsters looked really sharp (can't remember their names though).

Let them get on with it.

Best thing is to call his bluff and see what 'odds' he'll give you for Toon to finish above Liverpool in the league. If he really believes his own hype, then he should take a bet with you where you have better odds, rather than both just saying we'll each bet £20 against each other. See what he says to that.

While I agree with everything you say, I don't see how that means you have a lot more going for you than we do? That simply says you have more expectation, which isn't necessarily a good thing!

I predict Liverpool will recover a bit next season and finish 6th, but they desperately need new players and quick to do it. We over-achieved last season, but I wouldn't swap too many of our players for theirs (even if you took the off-field stuff out of the equation), which I think says the most. A few years ago none of our players would have had a look in under similar conditions!

TBF I can't see them having such a bad season again this time round and as long as they are willing to throw money at players they will always challenge the infamous "Liverpool and above"

Agreed. Always makes me laugh how there's always an up turn of a teams shirts and supporters in public if they get any sort of success.

E.g. Man City shirts went from almost never being seen to being one of the most common kits around this year.

Yes always amuses me. Amazing how many 'life-long' Chelsea fans suddenly remembered their beloved club's colours a few years back. Now it's City. Happens to all teams who do well I suppose, but still makes me smirk.

It's not just the Liverpool fans who have a high opinion of themselves. Sky bet http://www.skybet.com/football/premier-league/event/13926132 has Liverpool at 28-1 to win the league whilst we are at 100-1, despite the fact we finished 13 points ahead of them and our squad is just as good if not (a lot) better. Paddy Power are even worse, Liverpool are 25-1 whilst Newcastle are 175-1!! Whoever comes up with these odds ought to be fired, it's as if they just pluck numbers from the sky and didn't watch what happened last season.

On that note- lets pretend I didn't actually watch football and enjoy playing with numbers. City 200-1 for the title and Southampton at Evens I think. My first day in my new career as a bookie!

For the amount of money you've spent recently and the aims of you club, even if you'd finished ahead of us last season and won a cup, we'd still have had a better season.

Oh, congratulations you won the league cup. Despite the fact that you did your best to nause that up in the final against Cardiff, you managed to beat them on penalties. Well done. I think most Newcastle fans would agree that we really would rather not win the League cup to end our trophy drought. It's a small value cup, proven by the fact that the top sides field under strength sides and have a half-arsed attitude towards the competition. I would even go as far to say we'd be one of those clubs that approach it in this fashion. It seems all Liverpool need is a league cup win to paper over the cracks and you all go home happy.

We've been through this befroe. Bookies will offer the shortest odds that they can get people to part with money for. If a bookie thinks that both Liverpool and us are about 200/1 to win the league (which is probably about right - - it is virtually impossible to think how either of us could come close) but liverpool fans will part with money at 25/1 while newcastle fans will part with money only at 100/1, that's where he will set the odds.

Speak for yourself - I'd take a league cup win in a crack! Would I rather win the Champions League? Yes, but I'd rather find £1000000 than £10 but wouldn't turn my nose up at either!

You make a good point, but so does samoholic.

Winning a cup would be brilliant, even that cup that keeps changing its name all the time. On the other hand, that cup win is the thinnest of paper over some pretty structural cracks in the Liverpool foundations

Don't get me wrong, winning the League Cup would constitute a success but I would much rather wait to win a competition that is taken seriously. If I have to wait another 10-20 years for this then so be it. We've waited 40 already.
