Daley Thomson for me, the ultimate multi disciplined sportsman. And he should be lighting the flame with Redgrave in my opinion.
What a day it will be for Britain tomorrow in the Tour de France Or it would be if Bradley Wiggins wasn't Belgian and Chris Froome wasn't Kenyan
Redgrave won his 5 gold medals over 16 years, not 20, however, that shouldn't detract from the fantastic achievement that it was. For me, he'd have to be Britain's greatest ever sportsman and I hope he's the one lighting the flame on Friday night. Wiggins' win is great and good luck to him, but I wouldn't call the Tour de France an individual race, he very much needed the help of Froome and the rest of his team to get the win, the same goes for Armstrong when he won all his. Nobody wins the Tour de France on their own but it's still great for British sport.
My votes go to: Sir Geoff Hurst (obvious reasons) A P McCoy (Champion Jockey for 17 years in a row - and horse racing is more than a 3 week event)
Phil (The Power) Taylor, umpteen world titles whilst downing pints of beer - awesome training regime - downing pints of beer - and still able to hit doubles (whilst seeing double) - unparalleled...
I don't think any discussion on the greatest achievement by a British sportsperson can be complete without a mention for John Wark's cameo in Escape To Victory.
Nicole Cooke. Multiple world championships, Giro d'Italia, Tour Femminile, Amstel Gold Race, Freccia Vallone, Giro della Toscana and much, much more. Greatest British cyclist ever by a massive margin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Cooke
Sir Daley Thompson..my favourite sportsman of all time...definate competition for Sir redgrave. Met Sir Thompson once when i was competeing in a meet at Shaftbury track. really nice bloke and gave me the time of day and some advice on my race technique. Unfortunately i was a bit dumbstruck and bombed out in the race. Only managed 10.9 in the 100m....came 6th!! Sir redgrave orWiggins?...mmmm...Rowing and cycling are both animal sports...they hurt badly. Never figured out how you couls cycle round a whole country at that speed..without drugs.... A very close call i think!
Anyone who wins the tour is outstanding Well done Wiggins and Froome couldn't have done it in a better year . Love to see Brits do well but in football we are not close
