    What we know (we think):
    Carroll's transfer fee was £35m

We are about the only club that pays transfer fees up front.

    What we hear

We made an initial loan with option bid.

We then offered about £13 million.

    Liverpool want about £17 million

    A reasonable guess

Liverpool still owe us about £17 million.

If that guess is correct, it changes the look of the negotiations.

Our initial offer was: You let him play for us for a year and pay half his wages. If we like him, we'll keep him and you pay us £5 million or so.

Our next offer was: Give us £4 - 5 million and we'll take him off your hands.

Liverpool's tough stance is: Just take him, please, and call it a day.

It's an interesting way of looking at it, and it wouldn't surprise me if they still owe a large chunk of that 35mil.

I see the latest rumour is that we have offered £16m.

I wonder if that means "Just send him back - - thanks for the £19m loan fee"

One thing to note is they were quick about finding a player when Torres went for £50 million, which suggests they either had the cash to get Andy outright, or else made their offer in line with payments made to them by Chelsea. I'm not sure they'd have sold Torres for £50 million over X amount of years to be honest though, so I imagine it will be the former situation. But it's interesting to think about <ok>

Yeah I think I remember hearing Mike wanted all the cash up front at the time, which is what he does with all our players apparently. Won't be able to find a source now like, was from ages ago.

I believe Geordie Delight had the source up on the liverpool forum, it was from Llambias, saying we asked for it all upfront, they were late with the payment so we got 12 grand interest. Seem to remember that when it came out

Too bad. Doesn't really change anything but I liked the thought of the negotiations being about how much Liverpool were going to pay us to bring the whole sorry episode to a close

I hope we keep him even if he goes on loan for a season, but I get the feeling you lot may be right. Rodgers just doesn't want him, it may come down to how much of a loss are the owners willing to take.

Liverpool paid the cash up front. Apparently they were late paying so Ash fined them 40,000 which they then paid... Lollollollollollollollol

And just to add more insult to injury I'm sure there is something like a 20% sell on clause written into the deal that took AC to the bin dippers which is still applicable, so that reduces our outlay even further.

Mike and Derek must be sitting pissing themselves laughing at the thought of this coming off. It wouldn't surprise me if they pushed the deal through regardless just for ****s and giggles !!

I don't think this is the case, I was told that liverpool asked for the sale to be made in chucks rather then all up front in which ashley put the phone down, rumour has it Ashley charged them interest as the payment was made 10 mins later then he agreed.
How true this is i am not sure however i have heard this story a few times from different sources

I thought it was well known that £30M was paid up front and rest would come a little later. Although, I'm not sure this sell on clause is true, it certainly won't be 25% but if it is true it'll probably be around 5-10%!

    See opening paragraph:- http://www.nufcblog.com/2011/02/18/newcastle-get-25-of-any-carroll-sell-on/

Likelihood is we got £30M initial fee and then we get 17.5% of £30M if he's sold, which would make it around the reported £35M

Even if that's true (which is unlikely with such a big fee) I don't think a sell on value applies if you buy him back.

They're not the only ones pissing themselves, there's 52,000 more laughing at them and Chelsea. I have nothing against Liverpool or Chelsea but it is hilarious that we have royally ****ed them so badly. Sure Liverpool picked up Jose cheap but we built a europe bound team with Liverpool/Chelsea money. Thank you very much.

And now we take him back after a 20m season long loan. Chumps.
