Homer has scored 4 times in the two friendlies. SB said everyone "starts with a clean slate" so, do you think Jay Simpson will stay? And - would you keep him? I reckon I would, but what does he want to do? Does anyone know?
There's some comments in the HDM, Bruce seems to like him so if he continues to play well then he'll stay
I posted the below on the Ricardo Fuller thread: Just read the HDM piece on last night and it's easy to forget - well I certainly did - that Jay is only 23. I had him down as around 26 to be honest and it mustve been hard to leave where he has always lived with a baby in tow. Hopefully he now feels more settled and can have a real crack at it. To be honest I've felt for him, he hit that one golden patch in his first season and was then unceremoniously dropped for either Fryatt or Mclean. It mustve got him thinking 'what do I have to do?'
He's a 15-20 goal striker in this division given the right quality around him and the right service. Far more potent than McLean, and in some sense a far better striker than Fryatt
I still think Fryatt will leave. In a sense I think both Matty and Jay suffered by the way they were used by both Nigel and Nick, everyone in the stands could see both needed to play in a 2 with a 'back to goal' forward alongside them.
I want him to stay because he is a good player. In the rut system or with the right role he can be really good for us. Last night he showed some great touches, moved well and grabbed 3 good goals. He deserves a chance at least.
I think he's looked good in the 2 games so far, he looks like he's lost a shed load of weight and his touch looks good. I know it's only Ferriby and Winterton but he really looks like he'll have a good season. It must have been hard for him to get motivated under Pearson and Barmby, he had a poor start for us, scores 4 in 2 then doesn't play for months, similar with Barmby; he comes back from his loan, is told he's part of the plans, plays 2 minutes and gets an assist and then only plays another 5 minutes all season.
I have a feeling Fryatt will leave too, remember he was selling his house as his wife was not happy in this area and wanted to be back near her family.
I remember Folan and other crap strikers we have had banging them in pre-season, if the lad doesn;t want to be with us then get shot, if he comes out and says he wants to play for us and shows he can score goals then give him a run. Pearson and Barmby knew enough about him never to pick him but maybe Bruce might see something different
Its a win win situation if he bangs them in pre-season: 1. It gives him confidence and may get a run in the team 2. Keeps our other strikers on their toes 3. Puts him in the shop window if we want rid There's definitely talent there and I hope Bruce can get him playing well when it matters
I guess when Pearson started working with the player and saw him training he must have had a change of mind. From what I've seen he is a goalscorer but can be completely anonymous at times
I'd love to know the story behind that, as to the uninformed it looks like shocking management given the comments from the Allems that he was requested to be retained.
Neither Barmby or Pearson gave him a chance to prove himself. When we had the goal drought last year he should of a least been given the nod to try and change things, instead NB kept using Fryatt and McClean week after week and I think what Peason did when he brought in those two was totally wrong.
He still picked him for 6 months whilst he struggled to settle, then as soon as he hit a bit of form he's in the reserves, I know that would make me want to move.
"I know it's only Ferriby and Winterton, but Simpson's still performed far better than any other striker so far. I really hope after telling every single one of you every single day for two years, that this season is the year where I can scream I TOLD YOU SO every week" I posted that on the match thread, and I have to admit I'm shocked at all this support for him, I was basically told to **** off for two years and now all of a sudden everyone thinks he's a good player.
This, massively. Im not saying he will be good, the point is we dont know, but he was never given the chances that Fryatt or McLean were. Strikers go on runs, the best ones always have with Owen for example regularly scoring every game for 10 on the trot then not scoring for another 10. The decision to drop Jay JUST when he found his form and genuinley looked potentially a great poacher was probably Nigel's biggest mistake for me and Jay never recovered. As for training, Gary Lineker is widely regarded as the worst trainer of all time. Says it all.
