    Tada.

    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/156574-Make-a-realistic-first-XI-for-next-season

And this coming from someone who has recently been questioning why other discrimination isn't deemed as offensive as racism.

"That's right, key to the concept of racism is the idea of difference. Hence it can't exist between black people. So if a white person says something it is racist, if a black person does it can not be, literally impossible by definition."

So I cant be racist towards the French? Mmmm Interesting, I didn't know that.

The keyi dea here is relatively simple.

Anything anyone else calls a group you belong to is an insult. Anything your group calls itself is an identity.

This is why the term "coloured" is generally regarded as insulting - - it was what white people called black people. It wasn't always meant as an insult but that doesn't stop it being one. It is also why black people can refer to themselves as niggas/******s: if it is them calling themselves that, it is an identity.

"Mackem" is a good case in point. I gather it started off being what Geordies called people from Sunderland, and was an insult. They then started calling themselves that and it became an identity.

How about , " You black and white ****" that covers all possibilities and has been said on quite a number of occasions, with no offence taken I'm sure.

I would definitely consider it racist, because it is. Racism doesn't necessarily imply that the victim took offence, just that the words were used. Why we wouldn't necessarily give two hoots is because, historically, we haven't suffered to the extent that our race has emotive resonances today. In fact, one look at the media will show that the hierarchy effectively instigate hatred towards other races. This might leave someone feeling racially superior, and thus not really bothered if they are insulted.

Until all the skinny, hairy, or Geordie people of the world are enslaved for generations and abused based on said criteria, they are not really comparable in terms of offence caused.

Who really needs to add descriptive wrapping to swears anyway? Expletives are appropriate language for exhausting displeasure, but used in conjunction with an inappropriate comment which you deem noteworthy, like race or weight, well that exhibits your inherent superior views which come under the law's jurisdiction. Descriptive words on their own are not offensive, but it becomes a hate crime when you combine the two. I just don't think it's beyond anyone to just leave it at "you ****" and bugger off with a superior grin on your face!

As an English man living in Scotland being quite frequently called an "English ****" was humiliating and rather upsetting, especially because this was before I'd talked with most people... I mean, how did they know I was a **** yet?!?!?!?! Theoretically, I could have called the police, and yes these people would have been hauled up in court. But race is the only one which we have gained a firmer grip on in the wider public knowledge, and this points at the ultimate crux, the education system, because ignorance must be tackled at a deeper level even than it is now. Certainly, some of the newspapers must be cut from circulation.

The historical aspect just doesn't ring true for me. I understand the significance of it but its just not relevant today. The majority of the population today did not experience the suffering/enslaving in days gone by, just as I did not suffer at the hands of the romans. Therefore for me we need to stop living in the past and focus on education. As I say I accept under law that calling me a white **** is racist. But to me personally I would not take offence to the white bit and I would not consider the person racist for pointing out something which is pretty accurate!

In terms of leaving out descriptors, I think that is a much bigger challenge and probably unrealistic. Its human nature unfortnately and the nature of sight. Say what you see as Roy Walker would say. I am quite open to say I think the world is way too sensitive. I'll abide by the law but in terms of how effective and sensible it is, I have little time for it. I honestly believe we have brought some of the issues we see now on ourselves.

I think you're being verry naive if you think that discrimination against non-whites is sufficiently historical to be irrelevant. Monkey chants in English grounds are a fairly recent memory - - they're a current reality in other grounds. Check out the relative number of black to white persons in the upper management of any indsutry from football to finance to the law. Listen to the number of racist jokes told around any school yard.

Slavery is historical - - racial discrimination is unfortunately not. For that reason, while they are equally racist, the terms "white" and "black" used in an insult don't carry the same weight.

Try call someone a beautiful asshole. Then call them an ugly asshole. Both are equally insults based on appearance but one carries a lot more sting than the other, because one is generally perceived to be an advantage in socitey while the other is a drawback
