Following the weekends games its crystal clear we need an imposing rock solid keeper to give the defence confidence. Davis has served us brilliantly but this is top level professional sport and we cannot have a keeper who is a good shot stopper but makes poor decisions during a game and invariably makes a couple of mistakes too. As well as this he is short for a keeper, in this modern game forwards and CB,s are well over 6ft, and tower over him at corners and free kicks. Not good enough.
This is not from the other night, this is over the last season. We are in the prem now. We need a keeper who can kick well, make the right decisions, and be dominant in the air. Come on Nige, sort it.
How on earth has Davis gone from being the best goalkeeper in the Championship to one who not only is not good enough for the Premier League but not even worth trying!? I accept that he is not tall for the modern game but to say he invariably makes poor decisions and mistakes is simply not true. He made a couple of high profile mistakes early on in his career with us but since then he has been remarkably mistake free. As for his decision making I can only assume you are referring to his distribution. If so, I can tell you that he is doing what he is told in that regard. Bart would sometimes try too hard to roll out a short pass and put us in trouble. If Davis is slightly more cautious then I'm in favour of that approach in a division where the forwards will be sharper. It is blindingly obvious that we need a back up who is able to step up when the time comes but to start shouting for a new no.1 after 45 minutes of pre-season football is premature.
Davis will be number 1, what we need is a young goalkeeper with a view to replacing Kelvin over the next 2 seasons or so
How about Jason Steele from Middlesborough. Still young and I believe he played most of last season in the 1st team.
Nothing like passing instant judgment!! Best keeper in the championship over an entire season, totally inept after first 45 minutes of a pre-season friendly. Totally amazing comments.
This will happen a lot now I think. Now that we are back in the prem, "fans" suddenly appearing and making daft comments moaning about either the team or the manager. Oh well...
Side issue. People were wondering about goalie strips...looks like black for home strip and blue for away strip (according to gallery of ML Trophy).
Davies was the Championship goalkeeper of the year for his shot stopping which I don't think anyone can argue with. His problem is when he has time to think on the ball and then his distribution, decision making and ball control is poor. These days GK's should really be comfortable on the ball and I really do not think that our defence can trust him as that sort of player so I do think a first team GK is necessary as soon as possible.
Forecast strip was more a purple colour rather than blue. Both goals scored against us at the ML cup games were soft but at least Davis made a good save but collided with a defender and the ball was then tapped in, and he made a good goal line scramble later on. Forecast made a few gaffs. It was almost laughable if it wasn't tragic. Other than that the ML Cup was alright. I was impressed more by Anderlecht especially before the first two substitutions. They were good against us and Arsenal. J-Rod and Harding were good vs Arsenal, It was a pity we could not defend against ther #29 who was their only real threat and caught us well on the counter. We were definitly better against Arsenal, I expect Nigel gave them a rocketing in between games.
