Hands up all the lads and lasses who filled up during Andy Murray's post match speech? For me at has to rank as one of the most raw emotional sporting moments that I can recall and will probably do his popularity no harm at all...
Afraid I switched off. Delighted for Federer, he deserved it and just oozes class. I have no time for Murray, very good tennis player but a bit of a plum.
Federer is phenomenal, and in a way I'm glad he won, as the stats now show he is the best ever, most titles, most weeks at number 1. As stated above, Fed is the definition of the word class, he really is. I thought Murray was magnificent though, kept fighting & fighting, and I'm with RAW, was a delight to see a sportsman that really gave a ****. His time will come.
My point exactly mate..I don't think that anyone who watched that can say it didn't matter to the lad..
Losing finalist took just over half a million in prize money. Have to agree Federer was just class, Murray just seem to struggle with his first serve after the first set.
I watched it all, enjoyed it all, filled up with the speech and was proud of Murray. Funny how when a British sportsman wants to be a winner and acts like one he is called ****, a plum and the rest.
I can't call him a plum because he's British and tries hard? Just because you like him doesn't mean I have to Syd. Every British sportsman wants to win, no one is ever going to like them all.
He had the chance to become a great British sporting icon but merely remains a useless scottish tennis player until next summer. Lol I stick by my claim he will NEVER win a slam so long as Nadal, Djorkevic and a totally rejuvenated Federer are around. When all those 3 retire, Murray will be finished as well. Joking apart, he is the best tennis player in the UK for 76 years but he simply isnt good enough in the present company to win a slam and never will be. Mentally not tough enough and ability wise not good enough. Its sad but true nonetheless.
If any of those three weren't around at the same time as each other they'd all surpass Sampras' records. Phenomenal talents. Murray's a very, very good tennis player who would have walked through a couple of grand slams had he not had such obscenely talented opposition.
Totally agree with this comment. I just have not taken to him. I was wanting Rodger the Dodger to win; he just oozes everything from class to passion to compassion. That said I thought Murray was magnanimous in defeat and his speech done him no harm at all. Now we must back another British athlete (well I will) Bradley Wiggins has a chance to become the first British to win the Tour de France. Here's hoping.
I cant remember a time where 3 of the best players ever all played in the same era. There were always 2 players at any one time slugging it out in the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's - Borg and Connors;Borg and McEnroe; McEnroe and Becker; Becker and Lendl; Courier and Efenberg; Agasi and Sampras etc but the last 5 or 6 years have been ruthlessly dominated by Nadal, Djorkevic and the greatest ever player of all time Federer, who between them have over 33 slams to their name. Murray is the 4th best player in the world today but he may as well be 104th as he will never beat any of these in a slam final. I reckon he may have faired slightly better in some previous eras but he is a million miles away from a slam win in this one.
You are right MrRAW that we got to see a pure human response and the real Andy Murray during those moments. He was clearly overcome with emotion and my heart went out to him, even though it was quite painful to watch. I thought that Sue Barker wanted to give him a hug but was afraid to in case he really fell apart! And yet I think the deep disappointment he showed was not so much for himself but more for his family, his coaching team and the watching millions who had supported him. He felt he had let everyone down but he certainly didn't. I thought he was wonderful and played some of the best, most mature tennis I have ever seen him play. Federer is the best player ever and edged it over the whole match, but not by much. I am sure after a short holiday Andy will reflect on this experience and him and Ivan Lendl will develop a plan to add that extra 1% of physical skill and mental toughness required to be a Grand Slam winner. I believe it will come and, fingers crossed, this time next year he will be Wimbledon champion.
Whilst I agree with your statement abut the standard now (the world has never seen 3 such supreme players at once, let alone an undercard with the talent of Ferrer, Tsonga etc), I'd say 4 slam finals suggests he's not a million miles away! His problem is , he only has the game to beat Federer, and Federer is considerably older than Novak & Rafa.
